HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of vlie Hutt County Council wag held yesterday morning. Present—Councillor? C. W. Brown (chairman'), W. J. Lynch, G. Brown, It. Boult!, J. Wakeham, J. Walker, P. Mungavin anti H. Cook^ The report ot the Inspector of Works showed, among other things, that the Mungaroa bridge had been temporarily repaired until such time as the material necessary for the new bridge, could bo secured. He advised that the piers of (he now bridge be made of concrete. The timber for the two proposed bridges on the West road had been ordered. The Government Engineer bad passed the new bridge over Francis Brook (Akatarawa road), and the repairs- to the midges over the Hutt and Akatarawa rivers. Additions and repairs to the Porirua bridge had been made during the month. During the month forty-seven chains ot Walton and Groig’s road, up the Waikanao river, had boon laid out. -■-The report was adopted. Permission was granted to Mr Drummond to erect a boatshed on the foreshore near Day’s Bav. A deputation from the Johnsonville Town Board, consisting of Messrs G. Manson, J. Rod and A. Chapman, waited upon the Council with a view of obtaining control ot the Main Western road. Formerly the Council was paying the Board £25 a year for looking after the portion of the road running through the district. under control of the Board, but recently the Council had controlled the road. The deputation asked for control of the road under the old agreement of £25 n year for twenty years, the Council to renew th e largo culvert near Moore’s. It wag decided, on an amendment proposed by Councillor Bnuld, to agree to the request of tho Board, provided it undertook to repair and accept all responsibility in connection with the culvert. A letter from tho Town Clerk of the Lower Hutt in reference to the closing of the Taita Cemetery and acquiring a more suitable site was allowed to stand over for further consideration. The Council decided that it was unable to accede to tho request of Mr P. D. Boag to bo allowed to erect gates across tlie Hutt-Waikanae road temporarily, and that the road ho re-formed. A letter was received from Mr G. Bolton in reference to the proposed Eastbourne road district. A petition had been presented to the Council by Mr Bolton on behalf of settlers in the Day’s Bay and Muritai districts, praying that permission be given for the formation of the district. The advice of tho Council’s solicitor was that tho signatures to tho petition were not sufficient, and a reply to this effect was ordered to bo sent to Mr Bolton. In regard to a communication from Messrs Brandon, Hislop and Johnston, re compensation claimed by Mrs Carter and Mrs Florence in connection with tho Motukaraka road, it was decided that Councillor Walker, tho clerk and tho inspector should have authority to •make the necessary arrangement with Mrs Carter, and that no action be taken in connection with Mrs Florence’s land. A communication was received from Mr W. Cook sotting out the terms on which he would allow a road to be taken through his land; also a farther letter stating that ho would not allow the road to be taken on the eastern side of the creek. It was resolved that tho action of Councillor Walker and the clerk in causing the road to be taken under tho Public Works Act bo confirmed. Messrs Mason and Richmond wrote in reference to proposed roads at Muritai. On the motion of Councillor Cook, it was decided to accept dedication of the Makaro, Orna and Tuatoru roads, or streets, and that the said streets bo formed and metalled for 18ft, and that 9ft footpaths he formed and korbed. and all subject to the approval of the Council’s Inspector of Roads. Brown and seconded by Gounoillnr AVakebam, was carried : --- " Thai the resolution parsed at the last meeting objecting lo i..e formation of a fool nal li at the Upper Hurt b e re. tchided. and t hat the proposed foot path he agreed to, the construe!inn to lie carried out at an expenditure of £2o per year.” It was proposed bv Councillor Alungavin, seconded by Councillor Walker, and carried, "That all employees on the main roads be informed that they will be required to work only- half-time from December Ist to -March Ist i this not to apply to grants in aid.” Accounts amounting to £B3l 6= 8d were passed for payment. The dog registration fee for 1902 was fixed at the same rate as last year, and it was decided to call tenders for the offices of dog registrars.
