GENERAL MACDONALD.
MELBOURNE, October 15. At the invitation of the • Mayor of Melbourne (Sir S. Gillott, M.L.A.), Sir Hector Macdonald was the guest at a gathering of prominent citizens, including the Right Hon. E. Barton and other Federal Ministers, at the Town Hall. Sir. Hector Macdonald, in acknowledging an enthusiastic reception, said ne was hot vain enough to think tnat the compliments paid to him were purely personal. He considered they were intended to mark appreciation of the quiet, manly, and assiduous work of the rank and file ,of the British Army, of which he was proud to be the unworthy representative.-
