DUNEDIN DAY BY DAY.

Special to the “ Times.’ DUNEDIN, October 15. Sergeant Long, of Wellington, who has been laid up with typhoid for some time, has so far recovered that he will be able to leave, the hospital shortly. Mr J. A. Millar, will reach Wellington to-morrow in time for the mail service debate. He thinks the American line will be knocked out, and says those acting with him will aigue that the San Francisco service is already a failure in regard to both passengers and cargo. It can never be a popular tourist route. Mr Millar thinks that if we could afford it the best mail route for New Zealand would be from Melbourne to New Plymouth, thus giving delivery at the furthest centres within thirty hours of arrival; but he is not sure that such a service would pay yet. . A committee has been appointed to collect Christmas comforts to be sent with the Wellington contributions for the men in South Africa. Mrs Renwick, the victim of the shooting fracas on Saturday night, is still in the hospital, where she is being treated for the bullet wound in her face. She is making satisfactory progress. At a special meeting of managers of the Dunedin Technical School it was decided to take steps to secure the freehold of the land oh which the school buildings stand. ■ The reconstruction of the Bruce Weouen Mills is rapidly proceeding. The Tramways Committee has approved of the citp engineer’s action in accepting Messrs Noyes Bros.’ offer for the preparation of plans and specifications in connection with the light anl power installations along the “principal streets. The “Star,” in a leader on the mail ser. vice, expreses the hope that the Southeni and Wellington members will direct their efforts in the direction of defeating all attempts to renew the Sprockets contract and adds that next year Mr Seddon will be ,in London attending the Premiers Conference, and it will be a splendid ooportunity, if his hands bo not tied now for him, to secure for our colony participation in an all-red service in whioh Britain, ;tho Dominion of Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia and ourselves will be joint partners.
