ALFRED THE GREAT.
MILLENARY CELEBRATIONS. (Received September 19, 10.27 p.m.) LONDON, September 19. Tho Alfred the Great Millenary, which is being celebrated at Winchester, is a great success- Thousands of pilgrims are participating, including representatives from English, American, Australian, Tasmanian, Indian and Canadian universities. The city of Winchester, which was tho capital oi Alfred’s State of Wessex, has bestirred itself to good purpose in connection with tho millenary. It proposes to devote throe days to- the festival, of which tho King has consented to bo the patron. A statue representing King Alfred in warlike guise has been under, taken by Mr Humo Thornoycroft, w,.A., and is to be erected in a prominent position in the city in which tho King passed much of his life, and where he was buried. A meeting of learned societies is to be held during the celebration, and many interesting topics will be discussed.
