ACCIDENTS.
MAJOR BROWN KILLED. PRESS ASSdCIATIOX. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 2. Another railway fatality occurred hero this afternoon, Major Brown, aged 81, being the victim. Deceased had been buying fiah near the crossing of Devon street, and as the outward train approached the street he stepped across the line ana was caught by the engine and dragged for some distance. Wlieii extricated he was found to be dreadfully mutilated, having one legl practically severed, the other partially, and every limb more or less damaged. The remains were taken to the morgue, where an inquest will be held on Wednesday. Deceased was an old settlor hero, arriving in 1841. He was the first Superinintendent of the province and took n prominent part as an officer in the Maori war. He sat several times in the House of Representatives. Latterly he _ had been au interpreter. Ha leaves a widow and several children, one boy being in South Africa.
