FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON v. HAWKE’S BAY. The Hawke’s Bay representatives were beaten by the 'Wellington team by 12 points to 3 on the Athletic Park yesterday. The frame was witnessed by about jUO spectators. The weather was with a light wind blowing from the South. The Hawke’s Bay forwards were a fast and willing lot. but the backs were not up to representative form, although they played a stubbornly defensive game, and prevented a big score being piled up against them. Tire game was chiefly confined to the forwards, but was of a fast, loose character nevertheless. The Wellington team did not seem at first to realise the' calibre of the opposing vanguard, which invaded their territory in solid phalanx soon after the kick-off. and scored within three minutes, Hume following up a well pieced punt, snatching the ball as it came down, and running from the twenty-fives right over the line. D. McCarthy tailed with the kick. Ten minutes before call of time Wellington neutralised the advantage, Slattery getting oyer from a passing rush and scoring at the corner. The spell ended with the scores even—3 points each. Wellington had the best of the second spell, although their every advantage was stubbornly contested. Humphries, a Hawke's Bay substitute, went on in the place of J. O’Connell, the visiting captain, who injured a knee through collision with an opponent. Early in the spell, a very smart exchange of passes between Kelly. Wood, Wallace and Mclntyre enabled the latter to race in at the corner. Wallace failed in the attempt at goal. Shortly afterwards Mclntyre again ran in, hut in trying to get round behind the goal went beyond the dead-ball mark and lost the chance. From line play subsequently W. Adams dribbled over and scored, but Wood failed to increase, though the attempt was a good one. Just before the termination of the game Wood ran in and scored near the goal post, but failed miserably in the attempt to increase the score. The spectators were singularly 'well disposed to the visitors, and the “barracking” in their favour predominated throughout. .The visiting forwards played a slashing game throughout, but spoil’ ed several likely chances by hard-kicking near the line. The visitors will leave for Christchurch this afternoon, and play Canterbury on Saturday, and Otago the folowing Wednesday. NEW SOUTH WALES v. INVERCARGILL. REESS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, August 21. The weather conditions were decidedly against the New South Wales team for to-day’s match, and they failed to score, the game ending—Southland, 1" (5 trms 1 goal) to nil. Rain fell all night, and although the ground was not in the worst condition, there was water over the part to which the game often gravitated. A heavy wind blow, and the visitors winning the toss.* took advantage of it. The local team quite held their own against tie wind, and Maley managed io score a try. In the second spell they put up four tries —Jacobs two, Bain one and Head one. From the latter, E. Purdue kicked a goal. It was generally hheld that Bain should have been credited with another try. The play of the visitors was much admired, and had the ground been in better order ‘the score would probably have been more equal. Hughes.. Lindsay and W. Shortland did good work in the back division, and C. Shortland was prominent among the forwards. The result does not indicate the merits of the team, but it seems probable that Southland would have won under any conditions. Some of the visitors who were knocked about in tbe Wellington match stood out, and the strongest team was not in the field. Jacob?, Bush. Maley. Purdue, Stead and Jenkins were prominent among the homo team. The visitors gained golden opinions for their style of play. An absence of protests and wrangling was noticeable. THE OTAGO TEAM. , PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, August 21. Casey replaces Adam as full-back in the football team to play against New South Wales. White takes Buchanan s place at three-quarter, while Burt replaces Matthews in the forwards. With these exceptions, the team will be the same as last Saturday. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CARTERTON, August 21. The Wairarapa representatives to play here against Welliucion next Saturday will be;—Full-back, E. McKenzie; threequarters, Rogers, Brunton, Diamond; five.eighth, McMastor; half, McGuire; wing forwards, L. Armstrong, J. McKen) zie; forwards, D. Workman, Callister, J. Armstrong, Raisin, Jury, Eagle; emergency. Cook. It is unlikely that Raisin will play, as he is suffering from injuries. The match wil start at 2 p.m. The Taranaki representative team, which will tour at the beginning of next month, has asked Wairarapa to play on the Oth September. As this date will be a Monday, there would be no chance of the local union securing good gate. The Wairarapa secretary has therefore wired the northern union to play on either Saturday or Thursday. WELLINGTON TEAMS.. In consequence of A. Claridgo being unable to accompany the second representu. live team to Levin on Saturday, his place will be filled by F. Roberts. The local union has undertaken a large contract in sending two teams to play against the representatives of country unions on the same day, and the wisdom of the course is open to doubt. The team to play Wairarapa at Carterton is the same as that originally chosen to play against Hawke’s Bay. Both the first ana second teams will meet at the Athletic Club’s Gymnasium this evening at 8 o’clock to make final arrangements for their respective matA representative of the Selection Committee will be and the plajeis chosen are requested to inform him definitely as to whether they will be able to take part in the games for which their services are required.
