The Tarawera waited last evening the arrival of the Takapuna, witn ihe Suu Francisco mail, in order to take on the Southern portion. She sailed lor Lyttelton early this morning. The Admiralty collier Penarth sails for China on Friday. Captain Manning, of the Tarawera, is laid up with an attack of miluenza, and is being relieved by Captain Abram, of the Waipori. The Stormhird, which left Wanganui last Saturday for Westport to load coal for Picton, is expected from the latter port to-day. 'The Government schooner Countess of Kaufurly will ha absent from Auckland for about five months, and will visit the Ivermadecs, Niue and the Cook Islands. The schoouer teok from Auckland a cargo of coal and general merchandise. Mr Seigle, purser of the Waihora, is prevented from accompanying his vessel to Alelbourne. owing to an attack of influenza. Mr Wilson, of the Mapounka, is relieving him, and Mr Stock is taking Mr Wilson’s place on the Mapou. nka.

Owing to the Duchess being otherwise engaged, she could not tow the barquentine Pelotas to the Railway Wharf on Tuesday night, in order that the latter vessel might take in 100 tons of coal from the Alapourika. The barquentine consequently took in the coal from a hulk at the Queen’s Wharf yesterday. The barquentine River Boyne arrived from Newcastle shortly after noon yesterday, and was berthed at the Railway Wharf at 3 p.m. She is loaded with 82u tons of coal for Mr S. Brown, of this city. Fair weather was experienced on the run across-

A general average has been declared on the cargo of the steamer Gadsby, of the A. and A. line, due to-dav from New York via Auckland, and a deposit of 1 per cent, is now payable. As already stated in these columns, the Gadsby came into collision oh May 26th with the schooner Prank A. Palmer, when clearing the American coast. The Gadsby put back to New York with her port bow badly damaged and some lifeboats smashed. After renairs had been effected she resumed her voyage to this colony oh June 4th, arriving jin Auckland last Thursday. The Gadsby has 1384 tons of cargo for Wellington and 13 tons for transhipment to outports. The cargo in. eludes 10,000 cases of kerosene. 285 packages of dredging machinery, 660 packages of agricultural tnachinehy, 95 cases of shoes and miscellaneous American merchandise. Prom this port the Gadsby goes to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers, tak. ing her final departure from the latter port. The Pania hailed for Blenheim last evening, but the south-west weather which she met the full force of at the Heads, forced her to return to port. The Waihoira, from Svdney .direct, passed Farewell Spit at 4.55 p.m. yester. day, which should have brought her to port between three and five o’clock this morning. Should the Health Officer go off to her at daylight, she may he berthed shortly after eight o’clock. With regard to the s.s. Sierra, which arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on Tuesday night, we are informed by the local agents, Messrs W. M. Bannatyne and Co., Limited, that the actual steaming time on the voyage was 16 days 7 hours, and that the vessel was delayed at way ports, with largo cargo, 29 hours in excess of usual time. She sailed for Sydney at 8 o’clock yesterday morning. MAIL NEWS. Special to tub “Tiaies.” AUCKLAND, August 21. The barque St. James, bound trom Newcastle to Honolulu, was sighted off Diamond Head, north, of Newcastle, fiftyfive days out. She was dismasted, but under jury rig, and making good progress.
