HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present his Worship the Alayor (Air Orton Stevens), Councillors Cudby, Stevens, Aloorhouse, Hollarth Glen, Ward and Hayes. Air C. P. Skerrett wrote intimating his acceptance of the appointment of borough solicitor. The Potone Borough Council, the Hutt County Council, and Alessrs Wilford and Field/ AI.H.R.’s, wrote stating their willingness to co-operato with the Council in making representations to llio Government with regard to road and railway communication between Wellington and tho Hutt. In accordance with Air Field’ s suggestion, it was agreed to wait upon tho Minister of Railways at 4 p.m. today, A declaration by Air W. AlilnC' canfirming the constitution of Chew’s lane as a public road was received from the Hutt County Council. Air Miino stated that the road was made jn 1813, and although it had been disused for a number of years it had never been closed. "Offers were received from Alessrs AVilkins and Glen of land for a recreation ground. Air Wilkins offered eight acres at £IBO per acre; aruiMr Glen ten acres, with a ten-roomed house and other improvements, at £235 per acre. It was decided to inspect the properties on Saturday afternoon. Tho treasurer submitted a statement of the borough finances .showing that there was £450 13s lid available for the ensuing eight months. Tho cler —"s instructed to furnish each councillor with a copy ot his report on tho finances, ami tho matter will be discussed at next meet ing. A report was received from Dr Purdy, health officer, respecting the cemeteries of the Church of England and tho Presbyterian Church. The health officer was of opinion there was no present necessity for closing the cemeteries, and it wn.s decided to ascertain from him what steps had been taken towards closing tne Wesleyan cemetery. A discussion arose out of a letter from tbe borough solicitor regarding the Council’s liability to makei certain unformed roads. The solicitor suggested that a test case on the subject should be arranged. Ponding proposals which are likely to be made no action was taken. A motion to ask the solicitor whether the borough should undertake the responsibility of maintaining such roads if formed by ratepayers was agreed to.
