CRIMINAL TRIALS.

TRUSS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. Th© criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning, before Mr Justice Denniston. There are twelve charges—including one of murder =■= against sixteen prisoners. Mr Justice Denniston in his charge commented on the welcome absence of cases of which so much had been heard recently—namely, assaults on wopen and children. The only very serious case was the charge of murder against McLean. Frances Haywood was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment for stealing a auantity of jewellery from a house. True hills were returned in the following cases: .---Archibald Campbell McKellar, forgery and uttering: Charles Chapman and Henry Johnston Baker, breaking and entering; Alexander McLean, murder. Henry JohnSton Baker was found not guilty on a charge of breaking and entering a warehouse at Lyttelton. James Bowie Kirk appeared for sentence upon a charge of the theft of £250 from Beath and Co., drapers. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Peter Dunn, charged with sending threatening letters to his sweetheart, was ordered to enter into his own recognisance in the sum of £6O to pay £4 costs, and 1 to come up for sentence when called upon. ChaHes Chapman was found guilty of breaking and entering, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Alexander McKellar was acquitted oa a charge of forgery. The Eyreton murder case is set down for trial on Wednesday. DUNEDIN, August 5. Charles Smith, who was brought up for sentence on a charge of larceny from •the person, received tw Q years’ imprisonment with hard labour. William Campbell, for stealing £4O from the Public Trust Office, was admitted to probation conditional upon paying the money and costs within one month.
