MEETINGS.
At the quarterly meeting of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance. Mr W. E. Sansbury was appointed the lodge delegate to the Friendly Societies' Council. The lodge accepted the medical officer’s agreement. A well attended meeting off the Eight Hours’ Demonstration Procession Committee was held last evening. Mr R. W. Smith was elected chairman, and Mr P. If. Moroney secretary pro tern. Every effort is being put forward to make this year’s procession as successful as last year’s. Mr P. J. O’Regan will deliver a lecture at the Druids' Hall, Taranaki street, this evening, on "Rating on Unimproved Val uei." At the ordinary meeting of the Wesleyan Literary and Debating Society last evening Mr R. H. Wedde read an interesting paper on "The Merchant of Venice." The trial scene was successfully enacted by the following:—Miss M. McLean (Portia), Miss E. Arnold (Nerissa), Mr Lucas (Antonio), Mr Muston (Bassanio), Mr Black (Shyloek), Mr Williams (The Judge), and Mr J. W. Carr (Gratiano). Next Thursday Mr T. W. Rowe, M.A., will lecture on "The Literature of the Nineteenth Century.
