CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

Special to the “Times.” CHRISTCHURCH July 18. To day’s by election probably established a record for dullness. When all the shops and hotels closed at noon the town wore a depressing aspect, which increased rather than decreased as the afternoon 1 ivore on, and was enhanced by the gloomy weather. There was an entire absence of excitement.. Some idea of the state of things this; morning may he gleamed from the fact that at one of the principal polling places up to two hours after the opening of the poll scarcely a dozen votes were recorded. At another the Returning Officer and clerk were the sole occupants for a considerable time, and the advent of a solitary voter was hailed as a welcome break to the monotony. The celebation of the jubilee of St. Michael’s and All Angels on Sunday next will be a unique ceremony. It is the first instance in Canterbury of the celebration by a church of its jubilee. During the hearing of a judgment summons case at the Magistrate’s Court it transpired that a lady, who professed herself unable to discharge a liability of some £lO, had twice lately entered into negotiations for the purchase of hotel property. In the first case the purchase money was £BOO and in the second case £IOOO. It also transpired that the lady had no capital herself, but was being financed bv friends. In declining to grant an order, the Magis trate remarked that all the solicitor for the defendant had proved was that a person with absolutely nothing could gel credit for £IOOO.
