The Rotorua did not leave for Lyttel. ton till 11.30 p.m. on Saturday, having waited for the Josephine Stanton Opera Company. •ji'ne British India Company s steamer Obra was to leave Calcutta for tnis colony to-day. The Rotokino, at present engaged in the sugar trade, is to make a run in the Island fruit service in place of the Ovaiau.

The Pania went on the slip on Saturday afternoon, and hud a new.propeller fitted. She leaves for Blenheim at 10 o’clock this evening. The Rotoiti came off the Slip at mid. day on Saturday, and left on ner usual run to Nelson, New Plymouth and Ouehunga yesterday. The Rotorua brought from Nelson and Picton on Saturday 65 bales of hemp tor Mr G. H. Scales, a quantity of fruit, poultry and produce for local consignees; also 40 bales of hay. The Manaroa, which lelt Wanganui at the same hour as the Stormbird—6 p.m. on Saturday—did not reach port yesterday She evidently sheltered under Kapiti, The local agents have been advised that the Karamea left Plymouth on 29th June for Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, and that the Kumnra sailed from the same port on Cth July for Wellington and Lyttelton.

Air P. R. D. Leslie, third engineer of the Tarawera, has left for Sydney to sit for his chief engineer’s ticket. He has been relieved by Mr Alec. Mills, the late well-known and popular third of the Eotomahana, . The Queen Of the South left for Westport on Saturday to load coal for Pioton. She will afterwards come to Wellington to take up her usual run, to Foxton. The Westralia brought from Melbourne and the South on Saturday 370 tons of cargo, including 2000 cases of kerosene from Melbourne; She had on board 990 tons for Sydney, including 160 bales of flax and 68 cases of medium and Toaf cheese shipped at this port. The reason for the Te Anau being a day late on her run to Auckland via the East Coast is that the vessel lost a day at Dunedin transhipping the returned troopers by the Tagus for the Bluff. She leaves to-morrow for Auckland. The Ovalau, which arrived from the Islands via Auckland on Saturday, brought 4728 bunches of bananas and 473 cases of fruit for this port, and 1287 cases of fruit for transhipment. She left on Saturday evening for Westport to load coal for the Islands. The New Zealand Shipping Company a steamer Tekoa left for the South early yesterday* morning for Home and South African loading. She took in at this port a quantity of dairy produce for the Cape. The Tekoa will load at Timaru, the Bluf\ and Lyttelton, sailing from the latter port. The late arrival of the Haupiri on Saturday was due to the vessel being forced to anchor, owng to the rough weather in the Straits, under Long Island, during the whole of Friday night. She will sail for Picton, Nelson and the West Coast to-day. She brought from the West Coast 330 tons of coal, 50 tons of general cargo, and four boxes of gold for the National Bank—3l4Boz, valued at -212,592 Is 6d. The Argentine training ship. President Sarmiento, which' left Auckland lust Thursday for this port, had not shown up by last evening. As she is an auxiliary vessel she is evidently either coming down the coast under sail or steaming at a very slow rate. The Argentine Day of Independence happened when the vessel was in Auckland, and the illuminations on the vessel on the night of the day in Question are said to have been very beautiful. 1 ... The steamer Cygnet, which came up from the South on Saturday with a load : of produce, is taking back to Lyttelton 270 cases of powder. An attempt was made to tranship the powder yesterday from tho ketch Sunlight. With the rough weather and the heavy sea at the Heads, however, there seemed little probability

of the steamer petting cut, and her captain decided to return to the wharf. Should the weather ho favourable the powder will be shipped first thing this morning, and (he Cygnet will leave for Lyttelton immediately afterwards. The Union Company's cargo steamer, the Hawea, arrived from, Auckland on Saturday evening, on a special trip to carry guano (some 200 tons) and tranship ments from Wellington to southern ports. She left Auckland at 11.15 a.m. last Thursday, and experienced strong easterlywinds and heavy cross seas to East Cape. Thence to arrival fresh winds. Wellington was reached at 11 p.m. on Saturday. The vessel has just been docked at Auckland for cleaning and painting She goes from this port direct to the Bluff, and returns north via Oamaru and Timaru. Captain Abram is still in command. The only change in her officers is that Mr Proudfoot (late of the Rotokino) is second officer.

Among the passengers by' the Westralia for Sydney on Saturday' was Air W. Bennett. engineer of the s.s. Mana, and one of the managing owners of tha,t vessel. Air Bennett., in addition to taking this trip for the benefit of his health, will combine business with pleasure, aud while in Svdney will superintend the shipment of the refrigerating machinery which is to be fitted on board the Afana to enable her to carry- the new Patea Freezing Company’s dairy produce from that port to Wellington. Afr Bennett will he absent about five weeks, and return the work of fitting up the refrigerator and completing the insulation of the Afana will ho proceeded with without delay, so as to ensure her being ready for the coming season. Afr W. Johnston, formerly of the Huia, takes charge of the Afana’s machineryduring Afr Bennett’s absence.

The two wool clippers—the ship Drumhlair and the harqne Saxon —which left this port on Alarch 10th for an ocean race to London port for a substantial wager, hare reached their destination, the Saxon arriving on June 22nd, 101 days out. and the Drumblair arriving on June 26th, 108 days out. The smaller vessel therefore scored an easy victory, though it was thought when they left this port—being towed out almost together—that the groat spread of canvas which the ship carried would tell against the barque with her smaller canvas area. A more surprising fact in connection with the race is that the harone Lorraine, which left Wellington for London nine days after the Drumblair and Saxon —on the 19lh of Alarch—heat both vessels, having reached the Thames on the same day as the Drumblair (June 26th), thus heating the Saxon in actual sailing time by five day's. It was the boast of the captain of the Lorraine when he left port that he would make a race of it with the Drumblair and Saxon. At the time his remark was not taken seriously, though his vessel was admitted to be a fine sailer. Luck was evidently with him.

The barque Glenafton (1109 tons), which l°ft Dunedin on March 7th, arrived in England On June 12th, 97 days out. The barque Akaroa (1298 tons), which left I.vtteltnn on March 20th, arrived in London cn June 22nd. making a run, equal to the Glenafton, of 97 days. The Akaroa is anything but a clipper. Her smartest voyage to tho colony was made in 1881. when Captain Murray (now skipper of the steamer Cygnet, at present in port) brought her out in 90 days. •THE RAKAIA. PEESS ASSOCIATION. HOBART, Saturday. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Rakaia arrived tb-day from London. She resumes 'her voyage to.night for Wellington. (The Rakaia should arrive at this port on Wednesday evening.] * THE WEATHER. WELLINGTON OBSERVATORY. The weather records taken at the Wellington Observatory at 9 a.m. yesterday were as follow:—Barometer, 29.71; maxi, mum shade temperature previous 24 hours 52, minimum shade temperature previous 24 hours 44; rainfall, ,08in; weather fine with strong south wind.
