The Mapourika takes up the - Wninui’s run to the West Coast next Wednesday, and the Waiimi leaves in the Rotorua’s running to Picton and Nelson next Thurs day. the latter going on the slip for cleaning and painting on that day. The Dingadee, from Greymouth, yesterday discharged 311 tons of coal -into tho Tekoa’s bunkers, and will discharge 332 tons to day at the Railway Wharf. The -steamer Cyenet is expected to day from Lyttelton with a load of produce. She returns this evening to Lyttelton with general cargo. Messrs W. and G. Tn'nbnll and Co. are the Jocal agents. 'The present condition of 'the Grey bar is most unsatisfactory. Its shallow nature prevents steamers with anything like a full cargo crossing -with safety, and cases have occurred during the past few weeks where vessels have been compelled to return to the wharf and discharge part of their cargo in order to enable them to get out with safety. A Press Association message from Auckland states that the steamer Gadshy. from New York for Auckland, came into col lision on 2fith May with the schooner F'ank A. Pnlmeri The Gadsb— put back to New York with he=- port bow bndlv damaged and some lifeboats smashed. After repairs bad bean affected she to sinned her voyage on 4th June. PERILS OF THE SEA. CRUISE OP THE BEACON ROCK. The ship Beacon Rock arrived in port yesterday afternoon—sailing in under her topsails and foresail—after completing one of the most eventful voyages in the memory of colonial navigators. It is over nine months ago that the Beacon Rock, under charter to Mr G. H. Scales, of this city, sailed from Port Pirie. for Wellington. It is well enough known how, when near the New Zealand coast, the vessel, meeting with adverse weather, was thrown on her Beam ends’ by her cargo shifting, end her captain was consequently forced to shape his course, before the wind, for South America. He left South Australia on October 2nd and did not arrive at Conception Bay. till December 29th, the chip being then in a disabled condition and short of provisions. The shifting of the cargo and the fierce nature of the westerly gales which the vessel encountered smashed or damaged every topsail yard and created more or less damage to other parts of tho vessel,.

At Talcahuano (in Conception Bay) the vessel was refitted and ip order to prevent a' recurrence of the old trouble—shifting cargo—■ a new trunk was put in, which cost something like .£IOOO. At Talcahu,. ano there is a flue dry dock, but the necessary repairs were effected without this being used. After taking in fresh provisions another start was made for Wellington, on the 18th March. All went well till considerably over a thousand miles had been made across the Pacific, when westerly galea forced Captain Hutrbes to turn and run away eastwards. Thus the Horn was passed, and the vessel came on across the Atlantic and Southern Oceans, fair weather being experienced to the Snares, when very bad weather was met with, and continued till the vessel reached Lyttelton on June 21st. The reason given at Lyttelton for making that port was that provisions were short, but it is now stated that a scarcity of fresh meat was the only trouble. In fact after the vessel had been a week at Lyttelton there ,was almost a mutiny among the crew because fresh meet was not served to them every day, and because they were faring little better than during the period of their wonderful ocean drift. The Beacon Pock left Lyttelton for Wellington on the final stage of her voyage at nine o’clock on Thursday- morning, but was only 35 miles out at sundown that evening. As she arrived in port about half-past three y ester dsn- afternoon it mev be reckoned that she did the run un in about twenty hours. Contain McLeu. nan accompanied the vesoel from Lyttelton os coastal pilot. Captain Hughes has four officers—Mr Young (first), Mr Williamson (second). Mr Hughes, a eon oi the captain (third) and Mr Walton (fourth)

The Beacon Rock is a fine steel vessel, built by Eodgerand Co., of Port Glasgow, Her ballast is (he same as that which she took in at South Australia, a small quantity of lend and silver ore. She is anchored pear the Thorndon baths. Her future movements are uncertain, for though she was chartered to load wool, etc. at this port for London, her delav in arriving will no doubt upset t|m first arrangement.
