FIRES.
Lower Hutt is evidently suffering from an epidemic of fires. lerday morning a flock factory at Waiwotu, owned by Alessrs S. Alason and Ellis Brothers, was discovered inflames, and, in spite of strenuous efforts, tho. building and contents were reduced to ashes. No cause as vet can bo assigned for the fire. The employees wove working at tho factory till - 11 u.m. on Alonday. when oil appeared safe. Tho building and steely was not in | surecl, and Air Mason estimates his loss! at about £SOO, whilst Alessrs Ellis Bros, will suffer to tho extent of £2OO. i
This makes the third fire within 24 i hours, and about, the twelfth for aj period of fifteen months, so it is not i strange that a movement is on foot ' to form a fire bri-wdo at Lower Hutt. It is absolutely certain that had fire preventive appliances been available, a considerable saving of property would, in many instances, bare been effected. Rumours are rife tbnt the recent fires ora duo to incendiarism, but so far nothing has transpired to justify the sup- ; position.
