COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MASTERTON AND WEBER

A deputation appointed by a public meeting at Alasterton waited upon the Minister for Public Works and the Minister for Railways yesterday, and urged the desirableness of the construction of a light railway between Masterton and Weber by way of Pongaroa. Mr A. W. Hogg, 3LH.R., introduced} the deputation. In the replies of Messrs HallJones and Ward, it was stated that the line would cost very much more per mile than the sum estimated; that it would probably be found unwise to make the line a narrp. - gauge one, as the traffic might soon be sufficient for a lino of the regular goiugc; that it might hrdangerous to enlarge the provisions of the Loans to Local Bodies Act, so as to give power to local bodies to construct light railways; that if a railway was to be made as proposed it 'would, be better that the State should make it; and that before anything was decided as to the proposed line more information would be required. Tho members of the deputation were the Very Rev Dean AlcKenna, Messrs C. E. Daniells, Eli Smith, C. Kebboll and John Cross.
