R.M.S. Sierra arrived from Sydney early on Saturday morning, and left m the afternoon for Pagvi Pago, Honolulu and San Francisco. Included hi the cargo booked at this port was over 1100 cases of onions and about 100 tons of Sax. AUCKLAND, April 4. James Forrest, an old Crimean veteran. is dead. He was a native of Edinburgh, and saw considerable service with the British army. In 1803 he came from Bendiao to Auckland, and saw service with the First Waikato Regiment, for which he received the ISdl-GO medal, being also the holder of medals for service in the Crimea, India and New Zealand. A meeting of farmers and milk-supph-ers, held at the Auckland Agricultural Association’s room, decided to form a Milk Suppliers’ Association. About sixty members were enrolled. The executive was requested to interview the Auckland milk retailers and discuss with them the prices for the coming season’s milk. Tourists who visited the new Waimangui geyser on Thursday; report that there was; a magnificent display. There were five separate outbursts,!with a premonitory roar and a terrific mud column.
The friends of ! the late Mr G. M. Reed, the journalist, have decided! to erect a memorial of him in Albert Park, to take, the form, of a drinking fountain, surmounted by a .small statue. GISBORNE. April 13. The Natives’ Association has decided to repair the grave of Captain Carr and Mr Canning, two early settlers who died in' defence of their country in the fight against Te Kooti at Ruakituri, and whose last resting-places were recently discovered in the wilds of that region overgrown with scrub. CHRISTCHURCH, April 13. The executive 'of the Trades and Larhour Council lias recommended the committee of that body to adopt .the suggestion of the Employers’ Association that a joint committee representing each organisation should he established to deal with trade disputes, and obviate reference to Boards of Conciliation. A general meeting of the Trades and! Labour Council will be held to finally decide whether the suggestions ,of the employers should he accepted or not.
The complicated and contradictory Hanmer Plains wages case, Clara Clark v. R. W. Hood, came to a sensational ending in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Clara. Clark had been employed by Hood as a servant, and left with £O7 10s wages alleged to be owing to her, for which she claimed. Defendant swore that the girl had been paid. This morning the Magistrate gave judgment for the girl for £42 17s, and ordered proceedings ior perjury to be instituted against Hood and his wife. Hood, who was in Court, was remanded for a week, hail being allowed. DUNEDIN, April 13.
The following have passed, the first and second sections of the professional examination of the Otago University : First Professional—Peerless and Livesay, of Nelson ; Robertson and Bagley, of Otago. Second Section—Baillie, Blenheim, and Gordon. ' April 14. Dr ’Mason, Chief Health Officer, had a conference with the Mayor with regard to the Plague Hospital. Dr Mason intends to insist on, requiring the suburban bodies to contribute. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 13. At a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, it was resolved, “ That in view of the satisfactory balancesheets of the leading fire insurance coiSpaides of the colony, and' with special knowledge that in this district fire under-writing is remunerative, the Chamber strongly protests against any increase in the -rates of premium.”
