Tough meat will be much improved if rubbed with half a lemon before cooking. A squeaking hinge may be made to work quietly by rubbing it with the tip of an ordinary blacklead pencil. Ten small or eight large eggs weigh one pound, as a rule, and tour wineglassfuls e qual a tumblerful ®r half a pint. A teaspoonful of vinegar put Into the water in which eggs are poached sets the white and helps to keep the eggs of a good shape. In broiling steaks, if alittle salt is thrown on the fire before the broiling begins, there will be no spluttering from the dripping grease. Silk should not be packed away in white paper, as the chemicals used iu bleacliinn- the paper destroy the colour of some silks. Blue paper is best. Swansdown may be cleaned by washing it in a warm lather made from Sunlight Sodp. Then rinse it in cold water with a little blue in it, shake well, and hang up to dry. A remedy for worms in flower pots is to water the plants with iimewater, or mustard and water, making the latter with a teaspoonful of mustard to two quarts of watufr.
To Clean Baking Dishes.—By rubbing with a flannel dipped in whiting or bath brick, the brown discolouration may be taken off cups or dishes which have been used in baking. When cane chair seats are stretched out of shape, wash them with soap and water until they are thoroughly soaked, then dry in the air, when they will become firm and tight again. A new way to clean patty tins, cake pans, etc.: Place the above in boiling water with Hudson’s extract of soap, boil for one hour, and the tins will be found as clean and bright as new. When sheets are worn in the middla, slit them down lengthways, reverse the sides, and seam up the sound parts, allowing the ragged edges to come outside, where they can be cub off and hemmed. White felt hats can be cleaned by covering them with a paste made of white pipeclay mixed with a little precipitated chalk and some water. Cover the hat with the paste, allow it to dry on, then rub it off with a clean brush.
