THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS YESTERDAY’S POLLING. (Received Alarch 30, 0.39 a.m.i SYDNEY, Alarch 29. The polling for the first federal elections was conducted very quietly throughout tho city and country.

Great interest Li .manifested in the city to-night, and King street is crowded. r

Air Reid was returned for East Sydney by an overwhelming majority. _

The returns from Hume up to nine o’clock show that Sir ■ William Lyjxe (Federal Alimstcr for Homo Affairs) is having, a hard tussle with Air W. C. Goddard, the freetrade candidate. Air Joseph Cook, the State Post-master-General (free trader), will have an easy victory at Parramatta, and Sir William McAlilian has al arge majority over tho protectionist, candidate for Wentworth (Air J. T. Gannon). Out of 29 seats, free traders are leading for 17, and labour. candidates are leading for three seats. , (Received Alarch 30, 1.41 a.m.) SYDNEY, Match 29. The fight for seats in the Lower House has resolved itself into one of frcetnpde versus protection. Mr Bruce Smith (a former member of the Parkcs Administration, and a freetrader), scored heavily over his protectionist opponents for the Parke? seat.

For Plume Sir William'Lyne leads by 110, but the returns are incomplete. For Canoblas, Air T. Brown, the Labo ur-F reetrada candidate, is leading Mr B. R. A Vise- (Protectionist) by 190. The following protectionist Alinisteri. alists have been returned;:—For Bland, Mr Watson (labour); for Hunter, the Hou E. Barton (unopposed), Eden-Alo-naro, Air A. Chapman, defeating Air W. H. Wood, the Minister for Justice; Gwydir, Air G. H. Cruickshanks; Richmond, Air T. T. Ewing-; Riverina, Air J. AI. Chanter, defeating Air James Ashton, a member of the State Legislature. . .
