OBITUARY.
■ (Received March 2G, 4.1 p.m.) LONDON, March 25. The death is announced of Miss Charlotte M. Yonge, the authoress; aged 78. The deceased authoress was born at Ottefbourne, Hants, in 1823 and was the daughter of William. C. Yonge, of the 52nd Regiment. She was educated by her parents. For thirty years Miss Yonge was editor of the ‘‘Monthly Packet." and she is, tho author of many works of fiction, in the majority of which the.plot is made to, enforce, in a plain and moderate manner,, the doctrines of the High Church school of opinion. .The beet known of these are: ‘‘The Heir of Redcliffe," ‘‘Amy, Herbert," "Katherine Ashton," ‘‘Heartsease," "The Daisy Chain," ‘‘The Lances of Lynwood,? etc. Besides fiction Miss Yonge has published numerous historical and biographical works, including a life of Bishop Patterson, of Melanesia. Many of her works have gone through several editions. It is stated that Missi Yonge’s interest in mission work in the Pacific was evinced by a donation of ,£2OOO (proceeds of ‘‘The Daisy Chain") for the building of a Missionary College at Auckland, and that she also devoted a considerable part of the proceeds of "The Heir of Redcliffe" to the fitting out of the missionary schooner Southern Cross for the use of Bishop Selwyn. ■
