WRECK OF A YACHT

PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, March 25. A private telegram has been received hero stating that the yacht Ariadne, which is travelling round the world, is ashore on the beach south of the Waftaki river, but all are well. TIMARU, March 20.

The s.s. Upolu, leaving here for the South' to-night, has been instructed to stand in at daylight to render assistance to the Ariadne if possible. Half a gale is blowing and the sea is rising, so it is nu'ikely that she will be able to do anything useful to-morrow. OAMARU, March 25. The Ariadne, which came ashore two miles south of the Waitaki river at 8 o’clock on Saturday night, is the property of Mr Kerry, of London. She is a beauti-fully-fitted vessel of 230 tons and is valued at ,£15,000. The owner left the vessel in Sydney and instructed his sailing master to proceed to Dunedin. The vessel was beating down the coast at the time, out no information can be obtained as to how the accident happened. Mr Kerry is in New Zealand, but where is not known. Ihe vessel lies under a high bank of shingle and at high water is struck by every sea. It is doubtful if she will be got off. A heavy sea is rolling in from the south, but as the wind" has now moderated the sea may go .down. The, crew of twelve are safely ashore, and the vessel at low water lies in comparative safety.
