The Tnoaquito fleet would not face the strong southerly yesterday, and as lying snugiy at the (Jueen’s Wharf awaiting a change in the weather. The Rotomahana and Moura braved the elements, however, and the former is doubtless having a rough passage to Lyttelton. • ihe local agents of the Shaw, Savill end Albion Company are advised that the Matatua left London on the 16th iast. ' The Waimate, chartered by the lyser Company, arrived in Melbourne from Loudon last Sunday. The Whakatane has been delayed at Napier owing to bad weather, and will not be able to leave Hawke’s Bay lor Wellington till noon to-day. The Hunitangi is to go on the Patent Slip to-day for a. cleaning and overhauling. A new propeller will be fitted on the vessel. The G. M. Tucker is expected to sail for Sydney this morning, weather permitting. ‘ She is taking 810,375 ft of white pine timber. The Rangatira, which arrived irom London via Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Picton on Saturday, had a tine run out from Home, and has experienced excellent weather on the coast. The vessel left Gravesend at 4 p.m. on the 4th oi January and arrived at Port Chalmers on February 26th. The run from Otago to Lyttelton was an ordinary one. Tne cargo boat made the good time of 16 hours, an average of 13 knots, .from, the latter port to Picton, ft light wind being experienced, off the. shore .all the way-up. At Port Chalmbrs about /three or four thousand tens of .cargo'were' discharged and ‘54 casks of tallow, 14 casks of pelts, 71 bales of wool, 21 bales of leather _and a small quantity of sundries were taken i'n. At Lyttelton 300. tons were discharged and 24,000 carcases of mutton for Homo and a thousand sacks of mixed produce and 50 boxes .of butter for the. Cape, were loaded. At,Picton $282 carcases of mutton were picked up. • A quantity of beef, hemp and other Home cargo will be taken in at Wellington, and the vessel will visit Port Chalmers again for more cargo, and probably fill up at the Bluff, leaving that port about the 15th or 20th. Mr J. McDiarmid, late of the HnddartParker steamer Tambo, is at present second officer of the Zoalandia. The recent commander of the/Tarawera, Captain Neville, is at present in command of the Talons. Captain Hillman, late of the Janet Niooll, has succeeded Captain Hutton in the Omapere. The Waihora left Sydney at 5 o clock last Saturday afternoon, and is expected to make port on Thursday morning, in which case she will not be berthed before Friday morning. The Eimu, which has undergone her annual overhaul at Port Chalmers, was to leave for the North yesterday afternoon. The TJ.S.S. Company's Wanaka arrived at Port Chalmers last Friday from Newcastle via. Lyttelton (where she discharged her cargo of 3000 tons of coal), Timaru and Oarnaru. Immediately on arrival at Port Chalmers she .was docked for an overhaul.

The American barque Hiram Emery, which arrived at Auckland from New York last Wednesday, is on her second visit to Auckland, and is in command of Captain Fitchett, who was chief officer of the ship on her first run to the colony. The Hiram Emery brought a full cargo pi kerosene and general The s.s. Duke of -.Westminster, from to Brisbane, met with a tremendous hurricane on January Bth in the Bay of Biscay, during which heavy seas were shipped, which smashed in two boats, breaking the iron davits; and the steering gear was temporarily disabled. The first and third officers were injured when going forward to secure the anchor, and had to be lauded at Lisbon.

THE GROUNDING OF THE TAKAPUNA PBESS ASSOCIATION. I NELSON. Monday, i A nautical inquiry was held to-day before Mr Robinson, S.M., and Captains !Wheeler and Whitwell relative to the f rounding of the s.s. Takapuna near the bench Pass on. the night of February 11th. Captain Grant, in his evidence, said his crew was new to him. The man at the wheel, in reply to a question, had said that he had steered through the Pass before. He gave the correct course, but ,the vessel beginning' to : swing he ordered the helmsman to "meet her/’ Finding the vessel did not answer, he ordered the helhi “hard over." The orders were not carried out with quite as much promptitude as he could have wished, owing to Iwant of experience on ! the part of the helmsman. .. A few, seconds alter his last' iorder was given the steamer took the 'ground. There was no shock, j A lot of evidence was taken and eventually [the Court , said it was their opinion that oil reasonable core was exercised by the 'master. The affair was a pure accident ‘and no blame was attachable to master, officers or crew. The Court was very strongly of opinion that a new survey should be made of the middle bank. The chart showed the note "still extending.' and the survey was. made in 1854, but though alterations had been noted up to 1880, the assessors, who. were practical men, arid had often gone through the Pass, were very strongly of opinion that a new . survey should be made, i: No order was made as ,io costs. l!
