PETONE AND HUTT NOTES.

The Petone Wesleyan Church celebrated its seventeenth anniversary yesterday. The Rev W. B. Marten took the .morning service; assisted by the Rev E. P. Blamaires, he also presided in the afternoon. The 1 evening service was conducted by Mr Blamirea. Despite the rather unfavonr- ] able weather there was, in each instance, a good attendance. A feature of the services was the capital rendering of a number of hymns by the Sunday school children, the musical portion being in the hands of an efficient orchestra. A movement is on foot amongst local cricketers to give a fitting send - off and presentation to Mr J. «. Falder, who is leaving the district to take up a position at Dunedin. The young fellows of the town are much attached to Mr Falder, who, in a rather unobtrusive way, has taken a deep interest in their welfare. Feeling is running pretty high at the Hutt just now with regard to the site of the new bridge. To-night (Monday) a letter from the River Boar# will be considered, by the Hntt Borough Council, and on Wednesday evening the Board will again meet to deal with the reply from the Council. The Mayor will in all probability call a public meeting for Saturday evening, when those interested hope to remove the misapprehension that exists in certain Quarters in connection with the approaches to the bridge. The Petone Band repeated, at the Recreation Ground, yesterday afternoon, before a large-assemblange of people, the test 'pieces played at the Wanganui Band Contest. .At a meeting of the Hutt River Board on Saturday evening, it was decided to reply to the request of the Petone Borough Council, with regard to protecting the river bank near No. 2 stopbank, that provision had .been made for this particular portion, but that owing to the difficulties that had recently cropped up with regard to the bridge the protection work could not be proceeded with.
