RIFLE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL GATHERING. '“ SECOND DAY'S SHOOTING. PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, -March 22. Riflemen were* again favoured with Queen’s weather for tho second day’s shooting. Tho light wind, which at no time of the clay was strong, changed in an annoying manner. At first a light drift came from the right, then it drew round to the front and was a litile “puffy,” hut later in r.ho day it came across from tho left, falling away to a calm as dio men ceased firing. The Hawke’s Ray Match, which was tho first of tho Belt matches, opened Ihe proceedings. At 500yds Marshall, ol Wellington, who had made tho possible at the range yesterday, rang up another range prize, and this, too, with a discarded Martini Henry weapon. The shooting, on tho whole, was far in advance of that at last meeting. Among those who went back to the 000yds with good scores fveru Woollctt (Dunedin) and Watts (Christchurch,), each 49, Williams (Karori), Wakelin (Christchurch), Hobbs (Hastings), Bnntin (Christchurch), Boloyii (Charlton), Oakley (Nelson), Hawthorne (Wellington), Randall (Wellington) and Shanks (Gore), each 48. At COOyds the usual hursting-up began, and Marshall, who had a handicap of two points, was no exception. His score hero included throe “outers,” which completely extinguished his chance of securing tho chief prize, which looked possible at one time. Winslade, on tho other hand, managed to hang on, and with another good score of 47, beat Nelson, of Woodville, on a tie, and took first money, with the good score of 94. G. Loveclay, of Woodville, who is shooting really well, was third, having made 40 and 47 at the respective ranges. Following Is the prize list; —■ Hawke’s Ray Match, 500 and GOO yds; ten shots each.

The fact will, i f is bolicveil, be more clearly demonstrat'd! as tho meeting progresses. After lunch the Marlborough Maten was fired, and at its conclusion shooting ceased for the day, as there was not - sufficient time to finish a further match without risk of the men having to fire in a‘ bad and difficult lights 1 ' , . The shooting in the maten in question was also an improvement on last year ", as the attached prime list shows!—Marlborough Match; ton shots at

The council of the association having decided, in the event of a competitor using a Martini-Henry rifle tying _ with the highest score, the usual conditions in determining ties should be abandoned, and the prizes pooled. Waugh, least and Tngpeii divided the first three prizes, the latter having used a Martini and scored 48, to which had to bo aclclod his handicap of one point. The trio, however, fired 1 off three shots ,o decide who should hold the Kyuoch Cup, which goes to the highest scorer. In this match Waugh was returned the , winner, having put on three bull’s-eyes, whilst each of the others plugged on eleven. For the Wanganui Match, £l2O appears on the programme as prize-money, Imt little or nothing having been subscribed locally, it is probable that the. amount will bo considerably curtailed. It is explained' that the drain on the citizens here has been so extensive lately that the Mayor scarcely feels himself justified in making a request for further contributions. Major Francis, who is acting as range officer, will probably compete in some of the matches later in the meeting. To-morrow the Ladies’ Match (ten shots at 200yds, kneeling'* Ls to bo ti&on first. Then the Oamaru Match (ten shots at 700yds).
