CONVICT ATTEMPTS SUICIDE.
Timothy Cadogan has been executed at Cork for the murder of Mr W. S. Bird, land, 1 agent at Bantry.' Cadogan, who had been evicted from his farm, in revenge went to Mr Bird’s office, over a shop in the principal street, armed with ■a revolver. A scuffle and several shots were heard by persons in the shop, and Cadogan was afterwards seen coming downstairs, revolver in hand. The murderer escaped, however, and it was not until seme days later that ’the shop as-' sistants gave information which led to his arrest. After being sentenced, Cadogan, pointing to Dr Bird, the murdered * gentleman’s brother, shouted—“l hope I’ll be. avenged before I am twelve months gone.” Prisoner since his com. victxon has been very attentive to the ministrations of the Catholic chaplain, 1 and was fairly amenable to prison disci- : pline. His last night , was, however, ' restless, and in the morning, before, being joined fay the, chaplain, made an attempt to commit suicide by strangulation, which was,prevented by;the wardora; Billington officiated as execution•nrt, but: refuse*! to attend at the inquest, and a warrant was granted for his apprehsnsiom.
