! The indiscriminate - slaughter of monkeys on the .Gold Coast is leading to the danger of extermination. It is estimated that in sis years, as many a.s 1,000,000 of these ■ much-persecuted creatures must have been massacred in the Gold, Coast district alone. Indeed, the slaughter only showed signs of decreasing when the traders, having depopulated one district, found themselves obliged to go further into the interior, a- risk many of them were indisposed ,tO undertake. Alas, that the ancestors of the human race (sec Darwin, passim) should thus bo ruthlessly killed to satisfy the vanity of ladies for sealskin jackets and the pride of man to wear bearskin lined overcoats!. For monkey skins are capable of any de--velopment.
