STRATFORD RACING CLUB. Special to the “ Times.” The annual meeting of tho Stratford Racing Club passed off most successfully on St. Patrick’s Day. Tho weather was perfect and tho attendance topped the record. Racing commenced with the Hurdles, which, was won rather easily by Puanga, by Sou’-wester —Early Bird mare, Sultana being next and the Maori-owned Omphra third. Avant Guard and Morphina also started. Dividend, £4 15s. Only five declined the run for tho Borough Stakes, leaving no less than seventeen to face the starter. After an exciting race, during which much bumping -occurred, Sophia, by Gipsy King— Deadshot mare, won by a couple of lengths from Kidbrook, Purutia being third and the rest bios© up. . For the Oup (one mile) a fine field of seven disputed the prize money, but nothing had a chance with Lady Bell, Who romped in by two* lengths and paid tho nice price of £5 Bs. Bowsprit and Mars filled the places. Dartmoor; Taplow. Brown Bill and Thesbe also started. Air Watson’s ! ’ horse as usual went through a kicking performance at the post and lashed but in great style. Mr F. Cameron was loudly applauded for his splendid start of this race. Mr Goodwin had Lai' Bell in,most perfect condition, and received many con. gratulations on his success. Dividend, £5 Bs. Mr Jerry George provided tho winner of tho Welter in St. Ada, by St. LegeN-jCbhfidahta.' She won rather euil? from Kdiim aA- SEea** WMaffi.

Eight others started, including Lady Bell, who had just won the Cup. I fancy this mare would have been handy at the finish but for being humped on to the plough, where sh© galloped for some distance'. The winner paid £4 19s. ' The Farmers' Plate, of one mile, next came on for decision. Taranaki was made favourite, the fact of Air Fred Watson having the mount giving punters a fancy. Three Vanguards, in Watehguard, Dayguard and Blackguard, started, besides Clarion, Nyamihind and. King Edward. The latter won by two lengths from Dr Paget’s Clarion. Taranaki occupied third position. Much amusement was caused by the running of Ngamiland (said to ho an aspirant for next N.Z. Cup). This horse was ridden something after tho Tod Sloan style, but Ngamiland was not keen on it, and took a spell round the back of the course in the clump of bush. As the others had finished and were returning to the paddock Ngamiland came into the straight, and amidst roars of laughter and groat cheering sailed along, but his rider saw no points in finishing, so made for tho paddock. The St. Patrick’s Handicap turned out a pure thing for tho favourite, Haydon, who won easily and paid £1 18s. Brown Bill and Otaio filled tho places. Punters had a task on hand to sort out tho Flying, and they failed most sadly. Marianthus waft mad© favourite, Ticsidcs her Lady Bell,Wai-itl, Discount, Bugler, Kohina, Mars, Sophia, Kidbrook, Crawler and Pikimai faced the starter. It seemed any horse’s race as they turned for home, but when Lady 801 l shot out it was all over, as die won very easily from her stable mate, Kidbrook, Kohina being nest. The winner, who carried 9st 101 b, paid no ! less than £2O 12s. j j Tho Club officials worked hard to i make a success of tho meeting. As to the totalisator, the least said tho better. With four horses running things wore managed, but when tho second race camo on, and right through the day, the rushing and fighting to collect dividends and to purchase tickets was disgraceful, It is to be hoped that before the next meeting comes round the Club will insist on. a sufficient number of men being put on to work the tote. Another matter the Club might see to is the train arrangements. The New Plymouth train, instead of stopping at the road quite close to the course, passes right on to Stratford station, and a walk of over a mile 'has to be covered! to reach the course. Then again, although a special train was run from New Plymouth, the usual fare was charged, and after the races a good two hours passed before the north train left. The Stratford course ia situated in a bush clearing, and only those on the stand obtain a decent view of the races; the balance watch among the. stumps and catch passing colours now and again. The arrangements tor number board, also result board, dividend, etc., are perfect, and can be seen without any trouble. As the Club had! a record crowd and good . totalisator returns, the meeting must pan out well on the right side. It is a pity that so much money ryas lost through delay of totalisator people in ringing it bn. Many investors were so disgusted that they let races slide sooner than fight, their way up to the machine.

INCONSISTENT RUNNING. From Monday’s “Times” I see, writes “Egmont,” that tlx© stewards of the Hawke’s Bay Club held an, inquiry into the running of Battleaxe, but decided to take no further action.. I presume this refers to the • Bourke Memorial Stakes, won< <by> Materoa, 7 ,2, Ralaver 8.2, second, and Battleaxe, 9.1, third. On ref erring to the “Haiyke’s Bay Herald” for an account of the Cup I noticed that Battleaxe, 8.10, ran third to Ideal and Skobeloff, .8.8,, and, that Materoa, 7.11, was last ho finish. .In the Bourke Stakes, : ii-viniles, Materoa,’. 7;2, 1 Comes out and“ “woh'by -three Tehgths hard held” from Palaver, 8.2, . and Battleaxe, 9.1, and Skobeloff, 8.11, was last of the field. It is quite immaterial to me if Battleaxe, Materoa- and Skobeloff were run to : win or not; I had no money on them; but it seems most peculiar that Battleaxe for running into third jj.lace each, time should receive a review of his ‘ running, whilst Materoa (granted, she fiad less weigat and a quar. ter of a mile less to travel), who ran last in the Cup and won the Bourke “hard held,” should quite escape the stewai’ds’ attention, and, further, Skobeloff, with only Slhs more on, should run into second berth in the Cup, and whip in the field in the Bourke. Taking the running of the three, does it not strike you that the Taranaki horse ran in a more consistent manner than either Materoa or Skobeloff? Without making any bones about it, Ido not hesitate to say that the fact of Materoa being trained at Hastings and being owned by a prominent man, and Skobeloff also being owned by a leading sport, seems to shield their running. It appears that the explanation about Battleaxe was considered satisfactory by the stewards; possibly an inquiry about the others would have been just as satisfactory, but why not deal with all alike, and not drop on the .most consistent of the three, as was done by the Hawke’s Bay stewards ?

GISBORNE, March 22. press association. The Tologa Bay racing stewards have decided to pay out the 4s dividend oc Slap Jack. Visitors to the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting will find that the. Takapuna, leaving on Sunday evening, will; land passengers at Picton on the day before the meeting. Tho club is taking special precautions to oroVent bookmakers gaining access to tho course. ; Nominations for the Feilding Cup.— Tortulla, Ostiak, Crusoe, The Hempio’, Gipsy Queen, Fashion, Ideal, Jadoo, Bona Fide, Sylvia Park, St. Mark, The Shannon, Queen’s Guard. 1 Messrs B. Turnbull and J. W. Abbott, who were present at tho Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting, returned to Wellington yesterday. Nominations for the . Shannon Hack Racing Club’s meeting close to-night at nine o’clock with Mr M. Moynihan (secretary), Shannon.
