TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL
Tlie annual meeting of the Trades and Labour Council, was held at the (Trades Hall last night! There wore! about fifty delegates present, , and Mr {A. H. The number of unions affi-. liated at the present time was fifteen, with a membership of i close upon two 'thousand. The attendance of delegates during the latter part of the year--had been-vary satisfactory. The finance of the council had'during tho year been placed oh a sound footing. Tho receipts for the half-year totalled £B3 13s 7d, ami the expenditure amounted to £BO Hr 3d, leaving a balance of £3 2s 4d, in addition to which the council possaesed assets valued at about £4O. The Organr ising Committee of the Council had been kept busily engaged during the year, and had performed a large amount of good work. The committee actively assisted in the formation of the following unions;—Building Trades Labourers, Cooks and Waiters, Sausage-casing Makers, Tinplate and Sheet-metal Workers, Printing - house Machinists, Hairdressers’ Assistants, Petono Shop Assistants, Marine Officers and Plasterers. All: these organisations were in a sound position, and, ip several instances, had already done much to (better the position of their members. . A library had. been started by the council for the use of members, with vent gratifying success. As the result of valuable suggestions fro'm the ox-Maybr, ; Mr J. R. Blair, a committee had been appointed to go thoroughly into the matter of the erection of a Trades! Hall. The report pointed out that the council, since the alteration of one of iti rules some four or five years ago, hap only been too ■ glad to welcome unskilled labour unions to affiliation. 1 | ...
