LONDON WOOL SALES

INCREASED COMPETITION

PRICES FIRMER., (Prom. Our Own Special Correspondent.) LONDON, Feb. 8. The sales were resumed last Monday, after standing; over for one day in com sequence of the Queen’s funeral, but with a decided! decrease in numbers, the room/being a. good deal thinner. This led to a somewhat quieter sale than what, had obtaihedVduring! the previous week, though- in the aggregate there Was brisk' competition- for- the heSt-kinds, the • qualities .mostly. ; neglected i being faulty,,scoured* and .inferior . grease 1 , of withdrawn. for sapor - and medipipi was lively, and fa_te,. r-atps^-woije, obtained. j Tliej inest i’clay H sale saw a good aocessiqa’inj pt»h)h;ersj. sci<jeral fresh faces from the homo consuming having turned up on the preVious night. This led to a far brisker sale at increasing competition between home and German 1 buyers, prices if anything going against -buyers. The home trade throughout ’the week has led the van and -been the largest purchaser, .taking every grade of wool at full market rates, e/very day has seen catalogued some really first class parcels of .merino, the competition.-,beip® shared ihv by every section of the trade. It has really been, a satisfactory feature to see the increasing inquiry for all wools' showing any-'-While/'qy-en locks and, piecesjlniiyja Lbeen '..briskly called for at fuJI - crossbred -the' finest grades,- whqnj attracted aii active demand) from all quarters, particularly from America, and the initial prices were maintained, but all shabby, wasty lots and, medium grades have given way by -about 5 per cent. Coarse descriptions have lately picked up, owing to ; am active all-round demand, including America, for the best lots,' andl the closing values of the last series, are now being paid.—Some good quantities of Capes .have .been' brought forward dur. ing the week, but the selection, has been indifferent;, /.consisting mostly of heavy grease and faulty scouxeds. The first named-have’proved of difficult sale, and a large proportion has been withdrawn, selling prices being frequently 5 per cent, under the last closing values,, while the faulty scoureds generally fetched id less than,at the period named. All good wools -sell the best.’ Closing letter nest week. .«

Thd-Bradford Wofil market is perhaps hardly so glum and depressed us was the case «t-last writm'stybut for all that it. is quite enough in all conscience. No doubt the better evidence of life and the ffrm-ing-up of Values last week end at the London sales has produced n somewhat healthier feeling, but as regards any further real, solid improvement by topmakers.being able, to obtain better price*, tlijs ip -altogether beside the question. All that can be said is that spinners seem, morel, ready to do business at current rates, which simply means if a topmaker wants to soli he. must accept 18cl for a good standard CD's top, a price which.is too low* by a penny, tci he at all satisfactory.*:/ On all hands there is the utmost . degree -'of 'conservatism manifest to ba doing business, simply because topmakers cannot accept present prices unless; .they are i-prepared 1 to mako heavy Jeaerifies. <lf • spinhets would pkv 18,jd a good,;tradeicow]d ; ;bh dene, but in face of previous contrhet.4 made at abotft to-day’s price, there is little; disposition manifest to anticipate.. future; need's by furtlier buying,’.,forward.',. l *,' The fact is, outside manufacturers are anything but brisk, thdre .being plenty of .standing machinery and .orders ver.VifSoarco. Consumption does not ebepand as could! be desired, and commission ,wool-combers are far from having plenty of-.work. The actual state of the wool-combing industry is well nourtrnyed in- the ■‘fotest ■report of tho Yorkshire., Wnolcornbers’ Association.
