FIRES
STABLES AND STORES BURNED. PBBSB ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN. .March 20. A fire broke out at about 6.30 in the New Zealand Express Company’s stables and stores in Cumberland street, taken over from James Dnthio and Co. The fire broke out in the new building-, only completed about six weeks, and the whole of this, covering th re ©-eighths of an acre, was gutted. It comprised a large stable and a large storeroom. Most of the horses Mid carts were got out, but some six or norcn, horses were burned. The other building, also of brick, including Blacksmith’s and saddlfer’s shops and stables and loft, was damaged about the roof. The damage don© by the fire is estimated at between .£7OOO and .£BOOO. The new building was valued at about ,£2500. There wore 71 horse* in the stables. Sixteen drays and two furniture vans which were in the yard were destroyed, also the furniture in the storeroom. About £IOOO worth of the late Hon W. J. M. Larnach’s furniture was included. Probably £3OOO would he about the value of the whole. ' The building, plant and contents were insured for £8770 in the New Zealand Insurance Company, that company being reinsured with the Guardian. United, National and Victoria offices.
. - , , iIASTHETON. March' 20. >i' c • >l '9^ o out in a building owned by Mrs Cave in Queen street, Masterton, at an early hour this morning, the building, comprising three shops, occupied by A. Miles (tailor), A. Lewin (tobacconist and hairdresser) and P. B. Vibert (bookseller and stationer). The building and stocks were considerably damaged. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The Masterton water supnly was used; for the first time and proved very effective. The insurances on the budding are .£2OO in, the New Zcnaml office, ami on Viberfs stock .£IOO in the Norwich Union Office ,aud the Guardian office. Miles hod no insurance.
