MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meet fag of the Melrose Borough Council was hold last night, when there were present—iho Mayor (Mr G. Frost), Councillors Fullford, Brown, Walter, Keene. Isicol. Newell, Jorgensen and Clark. An apology for non-attendance was received from Councillor Highet. A letter was received from Messrs Brandon,'Hislop and Johnston, in regard to the Island Bay racecourse, stating that their clients w'ero prepared to hand over the streets and to enter into a bond to form them. It was decided that legal opinion should be obtained on the matter, and that the Streets Committee should report on it at the next meeting, if possible. Councillor Keene did not take' part in the discussion of this question. Mr D. M. Brooks was given permission to build'on bis section. •/ The Streets Committee reported that it had paid a visit of inspection to the township of Fitchett. It recommended that Mr A. B. Fitchett bo called upon to carry out certain works before being released from his bond with the Council. The Mayor said the works in question were required in order to bring the streets in the township into conformity with the conditions contained in the bond. The Council would not in any way be hard upon Mr Fitchett, if he were called upon to do the works specified. The report was adopted. The Finance Committee was authorised to negotiate with Mr Mitchell in regard to the exchange of a section of land at Mitchelltown in lieu of the section which be previously offered as a reserve. The Mayor said the section now offered was of greater depth than the former one. 1

The Lighting Committee reported to the following effect: —An additional lamp has been authorised at Washington avenue, Brooklyn, so as to light the intersection, with Dorking road. As the gas lamp authorised to bo erected near the 'distributing baisin the waterworks at Mitehelltown is a long way off the main laid, in the Holloway road, the Wellington Gas Company requires extra payment for the extension. The epmmittoe recommended that authority be given to it to act in the matter of the required extension. The report was adopted. ' Several Councillors called attention to various'works which they said urgently needed to bo executed. The Mayor said it would be advisable to advertise that permits were necessary before any building operations were begun in the borough. It was resolved that a special meeting be called for Monday to pass an order for the taking over of the Upper Kaiwarra road and Crawford’s road.

Messrs Haynes, and Dowman waited on the Council as a deputation from Mitchclltown, and Taitville. It was asked that a scavenger’s cart should be sent to those townships to take away household refuse. The Mayor said that delay had occurred in. consequence of the refusal of the City Council to remove the refuse. It had now bethi arranged that refuse from the townships should be burned in the City Council’s destructor, the Melrose Council paying £o a year for the service. It was resolved that the Mayor endeavour to arrange with the City Council for the collection, of the refuse. Accounts were passed for payment.
