The Chief Justice has returned from the north, where he was occupied with circuit work for about a month. It is stated that air M. Gilfedder, M.H.R., is' to bo a- member of the Royal Commission on Teachers’ Salaries, as teachers’ representative.

Hon. C. -H. Mills will leave today for Christchurch, and will proceed to Chevidfc to represent the Government attire annual show at that place to-morrow. Mr W. A. Kennedy, local manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, who has been absent from Wellington during the past ten days on a visit to Dunedin, is returning by the Rotoiuahaua to-day.

His Excellency the Governor has approved the elcctioir of Professor Maclaurin, of Victoria College, Wellington, to tire Senate of the University of New Zealand, in the place of Dr Milne, of Dunedin, resigned.

Dr Logan Campbell, who is to he elctc-d Mayor of Auckland for the period including the Duke of York’s visit, wont to Auckland before the site of the city was chosen. At the annual general meeting of members of the Poncko Football Club last night Dr Newman (president), on behalf of the club, presented Mr D. McKenzie (secretary) with a smoker’s companion, consisting of throe silvermounted pipes in a caseC on the cover of which was a silver plate bearing the inscription : “Presented to D. McKenzie by members of tho Poneko Football Club, March 9th. 1901.” Dr Newman stated that Mr McKenzie bad done good work for the club, and the gift was an appreciation of Lis services.
