HOIIOWHENUA HACK RACING CLUB. (Bv Our Special Reporter). The annual meeting of the Horowhcnua Hack Racing Club was hold yester-, dav at Levin. The weather was favour- j able, and about eight hundred people attended. A good-looking and well-bred gelding named. Missile, one of Mr D. Scott’s brooding, won the Trial Handicap easily. ArWewol made most of the ninning iu the Hurdler, but was beaten by Kaiwhakaroa in the last furlong. Kohuuui struck a hurdle the first time round, and it stopped him. A<luinaldo put down a better favourite than Gipsy J ack in the St. Patrick’s Handicap. Art Jewel led all the way iu the Cup (being ridden the last sis furlongs), and paid the good price of £ls 10s in a field of 1 four. Gipsy Jack scored somewhat easily in the Flying Handicap. The Wairarapa owned Lethargy sprcadoagjed the field in the. Stewards’ Handicap. Tirea would have won the Electric Handicap but for faltering at tho turn into the straight. During the day £2783 was put through tho totalisator. which amount is a considerable increase on last year. Tho attendance would no doubt have been larger had tho Manawntu Kailway Company issued excursion fares, j I r C. K. Wilson was an obliging and efficient secretary. James, owner of Art Jewel, with a handsome silver cup, valued at £ls 15s, which he had domu ted. Cheers were given for tho winner and Mr McDonald. At the request of Mr James, the cup was filled with “gold top” and christened in the stewards’ room. Mr D. Scott, owner of Gold Cord, who ran second, proposed the toast of tho Horowhemta Racing Club and its worthy president. Air Scott said it was his first visit to the chib’s meetings, but ho hoped to have the pleasure of winning the President’s Cup next year. Mr McDonald proposed tho toast of ‘'The Visitors,” which was responded to by Messrs H. Bailey, president of the Feilding Jockey Club, and Air R. Cobb, of Palmerston North. Air. B. R. Gardiner proposed tho toast of “ The Press,” which was responded to by the representative of the “New Zealand; Times.” At the request of Air Scott,! tho cup was again filled. Air P. Bartholomew (vice-president) stated he had; known Alessrs McDonald and Scott for! about thirty years, and both wore known as straight-going sports. It was tho desire of the officials of the club to carry out the meetings in a manner satisfactory to its patrons, and they were fortunate in having a good secretary. Mr C. K- Wilson suitably replied. After each race the winning owners wer© called into tbe secretary’s office, and received tho stakes won. #
