LONDON WOOL SALES

FAIR DEMAND FOR BEST QUALITIES. (From Our Special Correspondent). LONDON, February 1. To say the least, the sales this week have been a little disappointing, the results, too, being hardly so good as could have been desired. Towards tho end of last week there was wanting both spirit and tone sufficient to give an impetus to values, and instead of seeing prices keep up and maintain tho opening level, they had shaded off a full 5 per cent. The opening of tho sales this week saw no improvement in tho market, tho room also being thinner than on any previous occasion, many Home trade buyers having gone home for the week-end. This meant that Monday’s sale, although some excellent wool was offered, passed off somewhat flatly, though for the best wools there was some keen competition. . Leaving the first days’ sale and reviewing the work of the week, we find that on the whole the market has somewhat recovered its lost spirit, and for all good, shafty, desirable wools there has boon a good demand at prices fully equal to those ruling at the last series, though to-day the initial rise may be said to have departed. For the best wools, where character and condition is manifest, all sections of the trade have been very limited. We hardly think that certain Queensland and New South Wales marks have made a-s high prices as they did when a section of tho clip! was offered previously, Continental com-, petition having at times considerably | abated. Adelaide greasies have been *

fancied by the Home trade, a feu- of the lightest parcels having also gone to America. The bulk of the Swan River produce has likewise gone to Home account. Indeed the principal business this week has been done by Yorkshire, although the French and German houses have been fairly busy on good to medium classes both in grease and scoured. Crossbreds are largely of the fellmonger description, nearly all of which goes to Bradford, values showing no improvement. All South African wools are moving on a lower scale, frequent withdrawals taking place in heavy, short wools. In fact, all classes of a shabby nature arc more or loss depressed. Sold by Messrs. Windeler ami Co.. January 23rd.— W B/B in triangle ; Grsy. 4—Old ; 4 .sup. 1-bd, 7d; 4 withdrawn; 5 A do,'6/1; G B do, 6d; 2 do, withdrawn; 5 do, old; 2 v-bd pcs, withdrawn; 2 ersbd locks, 2/1. Some of these lots were very satisfactory, in. fact the wools under tnis name are seldom faulty so far as conation goes. Made full current rates.

Wool matters in Bradford arc remarkably flat, without the least show of life in any one department. Very little trade has been done uuring the past week, and worst of all prices have nn mista'keably headed downwards. Users seem at ’present to be the coinnlcto masters of the situation, and being confident that values are resting on a very poor foundation, and having previously well covered all their wants, are stolidly keeping out of the market. This recent boom in black pieces has as yet not touched the raw material, wide differences of opinion prevailing as to tr.n ultimate benefits which will accrue from this unexpected move, ’mo course _cf the London sales is naturally being made the most of, many people with clouded visions being under the impression that the trade cannot lift the available quantities of wool owing to the diminished buying power of the trade generailv.
