MASTERTON RACES, i (By Our Special Reporter.) MASTERTON, March 14. Showery weather was experienced for the opening day of tho Masterton Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting. This had a, great effect on. the attendance, which I did not number more than 600 people. The going was very heavy. Kohumii appears to be a champion in his class, and won a. double. Mr Macara won the Maiden with Greensleeves, who paid the best dividend of the day. With Plaidic, the same owner was unlucky. In the Masterton Hack Handicap, ridden by T. Wilson, she got badly away, and ran into third place. WaterI ford parried his rider in the mud like a good one, midi after this meeting will have to compete in open events. Kohunui will also go up. Gosnell rode Plaidie in the Telegraph Handicap, Mr Macara being dissatisfied with Wilson’s display. Although she got badly away, she should have won. Gosnell tried to get up on the rails, and O’Brien blocked him, which the stewards held ho was justified in doing. The field in the big event was poor. , Volley had slightly I the best of Gipsy Queen. Lady Ague's I had the easiest of victories in the March j Handicap, and paid a good price. In tho Dash, • several horses were in front at different parts, and the Taranaki horse, The Bugler, got the verdict bv the narrowest of margins. This was the best race of the day. Mr McKenzie (owner of Cyclist) complained to ,tho stewards that Mr Crawford had engaged to ride that horse in the Ladies’ Bracelet, but had afterwards accepted another mount. The stewards decided that Mr Crawford should not be allowed to vide at the meeting. The sura of £3563 was put through the totalisator, being £1135 loss; chan, the corresponding day last year. PHESS ASSOCIATIONNAPIER, March IJ. The tracks wore very sloppy this morning, and draining operations were greatly hampered in consequence. At Hastings St. Mark and Palaver gallopel once round oh the course proper, there being nothing between them at the finish. Okoari and Battleaxe, both looking well, performed a useful work- - ing gallop. , Skobeloff and Cruciform were confined to a couple of short sprints. At- the Park, First Blood and Crown Prince had a good set-to, the former just winning, jadoo galloped nice round. Her Wanganui work has not improved her. The weather has now cleared up beautifully, and the track will be in fine order for the racing on Saturday.
