ANNUAL NAVAL AETILLEEY COM- , j ■ PETITION. WELLINGTON NAVALS FIRST,., The results of the annual- competition, between the various Naval Artillery Corps of the colony were announced last evening, and show that the local company has euc- - ceeded in scoring more points than any other competitor. Dunedin wins second ' prize, Port Clialmers third, and Auckland and Pctono Navals scored equal points for fourth place. The local Navals are therefore entitled to wear the Government hedge for twelve > months. The victory is all the more creditable to the Wellington men as they have been deprived of the big guns former- ' ly mounted at Mount Oook for drill purposes. Consequently their practice had been confined to Saturday, afternoon.'parades and the practice at the camp last January, at the end of which the competition was held. A further disadvantage was experienced through the Wellington men having to fire reduced chargee from, the 8-inch gun instead of-full chargee, which affected the accuracy "of the shooting., ... - The men are loud in their praises of the excellent instruction, they nave received from Master-Gunner Richardson, and. other instructors of the Permanent Artil- ; lery. It is gratifying to the officers and men to find their labours have not been in vain. HIGHLAND RIFLES.
