The smart little schooner Bonga arrived yesterday from Lyttelton with a cargo of general produce and 42 tons of railway iron. , _ The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company a steamer Fakeha arrived from Napier yesterday, and anchored in the stream. She has only called in here to coal; preparatory to sailing for London. The VV aihora arrived in port last_ evening, after a good rest in Dunedin, bringing a cargo of 600 tons of grain an# some general produce from Oamaru and Timarn. Captain Smith, formerly of the Talune, is in command, and with him are the following officers: —First officer, Mr J. S. Pender, late of the Mararoa; second, Mr P. Burgess,, late of the Tarawera; third. Mr H. Young, late of the Hauroto; purser, Mr Hursthouse, late of the Wamui; chief engineer Mr Burt,_ who has been a long while connected with the steamer. It was owing to the Kini. which was to have taken up the Corinna’s running, being delayed on the West Coast that the Waihora called at Timarn and Oamaru for produce shipments. . On Saturday morning the Takapuna brought down 1200 cases of cheese from New Plymouth, which she discharged into the Aotea. . . , The Star of New Zealand has experienced very bad weather at Wanganui and has been compelled to put out to;sea. The Tndradevi is expected to sail for London at daylight to-morrow morning. On Friday last the Te Kapu on her way from Motueka to Wellington, passed the bnrqne Quathlamba, when about the middle of Cook Strait, bound from Newcastle to Napier, nine days ont. On February 2nd the barque Herbert Fuller was loading at New York for WeiUnfirton and Auckland and was to sail about February. 22nd. ■ . The Handa Isle is expected to sail next Wednesday or Thursday for Kaipara where she will load timber for Sydney. It is probable that the Haupiri will bo detained in port for another couple of weeks, as a further flaw in her machinery, so it is stated, has been discovered—a crack in her tail-shaft.

Yesterday morning; the barques' I)rumblair and Saxon were towed out ot the harbour, the former, by the Duchess and the latter by. the Duco. to sail on their homeward voyage. Both vessels got away together, but the Drumblair disappeared round the point well ahead of the Saxon, owing to the former vessel being towed by the more powerful tug. On© substantia 1 wager at least has beep laid as to which vessel will make the smartest run, and several sporting seafarers are known to have modest sums on the race between the two vessels. Passengers to Lyttelton this evening by the Waihora—making the present trip for the Rotomshana, which is laid up for a day or two for a "blow-out”—are reminded 1 that this vessel sails at five o’clock. The New Zealand Shipmasters’ Association has secured the following additions l members:—Captain Collingwood. of the ship Canterbury; - Captain Brans, of the Aotea: Captain Wyllie. of the Elingamite; and Onntain Tinney, of the.Aorere. .. . The Mokoia, which arrived from Melbourne and the South on Saturday morning after a very enjoyable run, brought a large quantity of general l cargo for this port, including 150 cases of Melbourne fmit, and 772 hags of berk. The Union Company has purchased _ in England a new steamer for the Tasmanian coastal trade, being intended more particu?or the carriag* of coal, coke, and ore.

The vessel is 265 ft long by 36ft beam, with light draught, enabling her to cross the ; Macquarie Harbour bar with a comparatively. large amount of cargo. She has a ! carrying capacity of 2600 tons. The steamer ia expected to - leave England next month for Australia. She has been given the Tasmanian native name of Kamona. The Newcastle (on Tyne) steamer the Highland Prince arrived in. the Tyne from the River Plate, after a melancholy voyage (says an English paper.) Bubonic plague brolce out among the crow, and the chief officer, Mr Wood, belonging to Souta Shields, alter lingering for 48 hours, succumbed to an attack. Maud Stevens, aged 7, one of the pas-iengers, also died. Captain Holmes, of Middlesbrough, and Mrs Stevens, mother of the child, were stricken down. The case of Captain Holmes proved fatal,, but Mrs Stevens recovered. The cook, after being laid up for ten days, also died. Some other members of the crew were ill, but they got better. Messrs Logan Bros., of" Auckland, have received an order from Messrs Hatrick and Co., of Wanganui, for a launch to be used on the Wanganui river above Pipiriki and connect with the present steamers running below that point. The new boat will bo 40ft long, and as ehe is to be used In working the shallow water she is only to draw 12in. THE WEATHER. WELLINGTON OBSERVATORY.
