When Honolulu was visited by the plague last year the most stringent measures were taken to stem its ravages, and so effective wore the means adopted that in a short space of time Honolulu was declared a free port. The first important step taken was to burn down houses in which cases had developed, as soon as the patient had been removed to quarantine. It was found, however, that this was a prolific means of spreading - the plague, as the firo drove the infected rats to all quarters-. A plan was then hit upon of erecting a temporary corrugated iron fence around the' buildings to be burnt. After the fire had burnt out a gang of; men entered the enclosure with clubs and killed the vermin. The result was immediately effective.
