At the Wanganui races yesterday the principal race was won by Skobelelf. The inquest on the body of the man Conway was resumed at Sydney yesterday. Tho Eight Rev A. E. W. Ingram succeeds the late Dr Creighton as Bishop of London. Tho Wesleyan Conference has passed a resolution in favour of the union of Methodist churches.
Cabinet has decided to appoint a. Royal Commission to inquire into the payment of school teachers. The London "'Standard”, states that the Manchurian Convention between Russia and China lias been signed. Lord Kitchener has reported that General do la Rey is besieging Lichtenburg, in tho Western Transvaal.
Eight companies of infantry and cyclist volunteers are enrolling in Great Britain for service in South Africa.
The Hon. J. Rose-Innes, Attorney-Gene-ral, of Cape Colony, has beer. - appointed. Chief Justice of tho Transvaal.
Mr John, Holmes has been appointed organising commissioner by the Government in connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to New Zealand. ;
