EVENING ENTERTAINMENTS

Popper’s Ghost Company produced “Faust” at the Opera House last night, with spectral effects. Mr Meadows impersonated Faust, Mr Fred Smith Mepliistopheles, and Miss Octavia, Marguerite. A number of minor characters appeared in the piece. Miss Fitzsimmons supplied the musics with her usual ability. The production of "Faust” was followed by a variety entertainment, in which the Misses Lucy Fraser, Octavia. Beresford, Messrs J. Hagan, Humphries, Harvey, Martyn Hagan, and Zeno (the juggling genius) appeared. The entertainment concluded with a farce.

The doings of the Dix Gaiet y Company at tlie Theatre Royal have a silvery hue of prosperity at present. The Tylers’ “Risley” act has caught the public favour, and the vagaries of Messrs Cowan and Clark find approval whenever produced. Miss Olivo Lenton maintains her well-deserved popularity, and the child wonder, Eileen Boyd, nightly dances her way to public appreciation. Fuller’s Bijou Company performed at the Choral Hall, last evening to a big house, and aroused much appreciative applause. Mr Fred. Bluett sang his songs acceptably, and Mr George Williamson shared with him the encore honours. Miss Maud Failing made her first appearance with the company last night. She sang a number of “coon” songs in a manner that earned her a hearty reception.

Miss Kate Connell, whose first concert in Wellington will be given in the Opera House on Thursday next, will give a concert at Palmerston this evening, and at Masterton on, Monday. Miss Connell has had enthusiastic receptions in all the Northern towns at which she lias appeared, notably at Hawera, Wanganui and New Plymouth., After visiting the principal towns of New Zealand, it is Miss Connell's intention to sing in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide before proceeding to Europe.
