THE COST OF “ASSISTANCE. LONDON. March 3. In tho House of Commons, Captain Prctyman, one of the Civil Lords of the Admiralty, explaining tho vote for the Australian Contingent in China, declared that its services had proved _ most valuable, and were highly appreciated. The gallantry of tho Australians was alway's conspicuous. Mr James Daly, member for Monaghan South, remarked that the fact that only six hundred could be picked up at street corners showed that the colonies were out of sympathy with Britain. Tho vote passed by 235 to 67. Mr J. C. Flynn, member for Cork North, said that the payment of £24,000 for the services of the South Australian gunboat Protector was not evidence of the high character of colonial loyalty.
