Dreamland; the winner of the Australian Cup, was bred at St. Albans by the lato Mr AV. It. Wilson in 1891, and is consequently rising nine years of ago. As a.-yearling ho realised top pried at tho St. Albans sale, being purchased by Mr It. Orr for 633 guineas. Pie won his purchase money on tho first occasion that he sported silk, in the Maribyrmong Plate (worth 1000 sovs), in which he raced in the nomination of Messrs Bailey and Orr, and beat a field of sixteen. , This, ivas the only' occasion on wnich he was raced as a two-year-old. Dreamland was a strong winter favourite for the Victoria Derby. He opened bis three-year-old career in the Caulfielci Guineas, for which event- he started favourite, but could only get third to Cobbitty. At Flemingten ho wont out a strong favourite for the Derby, but once more let his supporters down, finishing unplaced behind The Harvester. Ho started at any price in the Melbourne Cup, iron by Patron, and finished in tho ruck._ Before tho conclusion of the meeting ho showed that he could gallop by running second to -Fortimatus in tho Royal Park Stakes, but. ran like a duffer in the Spring Stakes, when meeting horses his own ago. As a four-yoar-oid, Dreamland ran unplaced to Hova in tho Melbourne Stakes and Armaria in tho Melbourne Cup. In the autumn bo started at a short price for tho Australian Cup, won by Idolater, and finished fifth. Messrs Bailey and Orr stuck to their handsome and expensive colt, and the following spring saw him again contesting the Melbourne Cup. He occupied about eleveiith place behind Nowhavcn. Ho was next brought out at tho Grand National meeting, where he shaped like a commoner in a flat race. As a soven-year-old, Dreamland, 7st 71b, ran a dead, heat with La Carabine, 7st 9lb, in the August Handicap, one mile and a half, .and beat tho St. Albans mare in the run off. Ho got into tho Melbourne Cup with tho light impost of 7st- 21b, and was one of tho last to finish behind Tho Grafter. His first appearance in Sir Rupert Clarke's colours was in the Adelaida Cup. i He has since been in retirement, and his. success reflects great credit on James Scobic, the Ballarat trainer, for hating persevered with him so long. This stable, of which Sir Rupert Clarke, Messrs R. Orr and F. T. Forrest are the principal patrons, has been well nigh invincible during the past year, and has been qgite as successful in proportion to the number of horses raced as were the late Hon Jas. White and tho late Mr W. R. Wilson in their best days. Like the Newmarket Handicap winner (Wakeful), Dreamland is by the successful Musket sire Trenton, now in England. Berth winners were bred bv the

laic squire of St. Albans, and arc ncar- | iv full-bloodod relations. 1 mom ilia i (dam of Wakeful') is by Robinson Cm’sfif—Nightmare (dam of Dreamland). Ml sister to Commotion._ Insomnia is sister to La Tosco, who did good service in the St. Albans colours, while Dreamland ii brother to Slumber. The voiip winner was one of the first batciy of tue Trentons. Although rani Pry is not at present so serviceable as he was last autumn, Scobio’ti stable the champion two-year-old States (another examnlc of the successful St. Simon-Muskct nick); the three-vrur-okls iu Closn nnJ i.j-Mtstci , Lit Carabine, who can hold her own v.ith the division; and such handicap performers as Tiro Bride and Dreamland. With the exception of Maltster and Paul Prv, the whole of the horses mentioned arc descendants ot the stout Musket family. Flintlock who acted as "imner-uo to Dreamland, is a gicj brother to Ambcrite, who has been maki„,r a name for himself as a Carbine, out inDic West. He n rising seven Jears of a"o, and also bc.ongs to the lust batch of "‘old Jack's ’ stock.
