MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

POLICY OF THE RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION. The Wellington Ratepayers’ Association last night discussed its policy with reference to the coming municipal dtt* tfons. At a recent meeting a comjhtfee was appointed to select names of candidates suitable for the Council who should be supported by the Association, but last night strenuous objection was taken to this course by several members, who urged that instead of doing this, the Association should adopt a programme and vote for the men who supported it. Unally this view so impressed the majority that the meeting agreed to draw up the programme then and there. This naturally opened up considerable discussion, the speakers traversing every conceivable topic of municipal ad&inistration. At length the Association selected the following planks of its policy: 1, The extension of the tramway system.

2. The re-organisation of the present working system, so that the city may be divided into working districts under separate working overseers. 3. That the proposal of the City Council to purchase part of Miramar for recreation and other purposes is not desirable, and that this association will oppose it in every way. 4. That the electric light works should be in the hands of the City Council,

5. That the Council should acquire the gasworks aa early as they think expedient.

At this stage, as the hands of the clock pointed to 10.25 p.m., the Association (adjourned till Tuesday evening next, when probably some more planks will be added to the platform.
