The first officer of the Tarawera, Mr Drewitt, has been transferred to the Corinna in a similar capacity. Mr Darragh, late skipper of the Kestrel is at present acting as mate of the Te Kapu. The local agents of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company have been advised that the Matatua arrived in London last Friday. The Arawa. which is at present on, the Taranaki coast, is going from Waitara to Westport to load coal back for the former port. The Pakeha left for Napier on Sunday morning to finish her loading at the Hawke’s Bay port, and will call at Wellington for coal before proceeding Home. It has been decided by the Marine Department that an inquiry shall be held into circumstances attending the stranding of the Takapuna in .the French Pass recently.

Mr Smith, of the firm of Pitcaithly, Wallace and Co., has received advice that the Lady St. Aubyn, which went ashore at the mouth of Kaipara Harbour, is a wreck, and that there is not the slightest possibility of saving the vessel. The ship Canterbury is to in ballast this morning, preparatory to sailing for Lyttelton, to load tor Capetown. The Star of New Zealand leaves Wellington forth© Wanganui roadstead next Thursday. She is taking in at this port a meat cargo equal to 17,000 sheep, also 800 bales of wool.

Captain Mclntyre, late of the Manaroa, is at present relieving Captain Collins, of th'e Wanganui river steamer Aotea, who is enjoying a holiday. Captain McIntyre has received several mementoes of his connection with the Manaroa from the crew of that steamer.

Messrs W. M. Bannatyne and Co., local agents for the Tyser line advise that the Indradevi is due here from Napier on Thursday morning, to take in 20.000 carcases of mutton and 880 casks of tallow; also, that the Star of Australia is due here next Monday, and will then visit Southern and Northern ports before returning here for her final loading of meat. The set of ten cranes which are being constructed by the Hydraulic Engineering Company of Chester for the Glasgow Wharf are on a rather different principle to those at present in use on the Queen’s Wharf. They will stand on a gantiy spanning two lines of railway, the legs of the gantry resting on either side of the two lines of rail, and the crane being over end above the trucks. ' The new cranes can thus unload into the trucks running underneath them or discharge to the side, between the rails and sheds. An improvement in the new crane over those on the Quesn’s Wharf is that the rake will be much greater, an improvement, necessary in working big ships, especially when high out of water. THE WEATHER.
