CHARGE OF MURDER
PRESS ASSOCIATION. YVAIM A TE. March 1. On resuming inquiry into the charge of murder laid against Jeremiah McCarthy,, the Magistrate ruled that Ellen McCarthy might bo treated as a hostile witness. Her statement made to Detective Fitzgerald and signed by her on tho 10th January was put in. It stated that when tho old man (Thomas Sullivan) came to the door in the evening her father hit him with a stick and knocked him down. Her father then took him. away in a wheelbarrow. Afterwards she beard that the old man was dead. On a subsequent date, at tho Crown Prosecutor's office, she added that her lather hit the old man half a dozen times with an uxchandlo. Tho police evidence as to tho finding of the body indicated that it bad been placed where it was found after death. Dr Barclay, who made the post-mortem for tho inquest, was tho lust witness for tho Crown. Tho injuries wdiich he found were accounted for by the evidence of Kate McCarthy, and accelerated death. M r Raymond, who appeared for the accused, called no witnesses. He reserved tho defence. The accused was committed for trial.
