PBESS ASSOCIATION. CHJKISTCHUECH, February 28. In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Justice Denniston gave judgment in the case of tbei Canterbury Jockey Club against Patterson, bookmaker, a claim for damages for trespass on the racecourse. The case involved the question whether the club had the right to exclude persons from the course. Judgment was given for the plaintiff club for Jis. with costs. Proceedings were stayed in order that an appeal could be made, conditional on its being taken at the next sittings of the Court'of Appeal. AUCKLAND, February 28. At "the Supreme Court to-day, the Chief Justice commented strongly on the practice which mining companies had of paying men by cheque, and thus placing in their way a temptation to spend money when cashing the cheques at hotels.' John Holland, charged for the second time with assault on a child, the jurv after two hours’, retirement, intimated that they were unable to agree, but by, direction of the Judge they retired again, and returned some time late with a verdict of not guilty. The accused ivas discharged. Andrew Walker Bremner and James Parker were charged with theft. ’ Parker was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, and Bremner was admitted to probation for one year.
