SYDNEY RAILWAY ACCIDENT

: EXAMINATION OF THE LINE. (Received March 1, 0.33 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 28. la connection' with the inquest into the death of .the victims of the Sydenham railway ' accident. the jury, with witnesses "and experts, visited ihe. scene. . Mr. Carruthcrs pointed out where he saw the broken fish-plate, and declared that it had been replaced. Experts examined it, aud swore it had not. _ Mr Carruthcrs said it was impassible for him to swear to the exact rail, and that it was a farce to ask him to locate it after repairs had been effected. Two other witnesses, who stated that they saw a broken plate just after the accident, located different places, - and complained that repairs had been made. A fettler pointed out'.a fish-plate two rails beyond the spot indicated by Mr Car rut hors, which, an hour after the accident, was replaced. He said the plate was fractured by the engine after it was derailed. Another witness deposed -that lie examined the line a few minutes after the disaster. He corroborated the fettler’s . statement, and said he saw distinct in-

dications that the engine went off the line two rail-lengths nearer Sydney.
