On the motion of Councillor Luke, tho petition with respect to asphalting a private right-of-way off moir street was referred back to the committee with a view to ascertaining whether the residents would pay part of the , cost.
The remainder of the report was
adopted. Councillor Tolhurst moved—(l) That, in view of there being: no native owners now entitled to the New Zealand Company’s tenths in the city of Wellington, this Council petition the General Assembly to have these reserves vested in the Council for recreation purposes,
in lieu of various reserves taken from the Town Belt in the past; and, (2) that, in view of the fact that the trust of the Wellington College site is no longer observed, the Council petition the General Assembly to re-vest this laud in the Council for recreation purposes. The Mayor ruled that as the subject of Clause 2 of the’ motion was before the Court, it was out of or der. Councillor Tolhurst, addressing himself to the first part of the motion, ax. plained the original position of the city reserves. There were 38?, acres belong-
ing to Wellington natives, who had a 1 died, and the revenue from the lease n
that laud was being devoted to other purposes. In view of the fact that Weiiington had been despoiled of a largo portion of its reserves, he thought that Parliament should vest the area in the city for recreation purposes. Councillor Smith seconded the motion, ami complimented Councillor Tolluu -t on bringing it forward. Luke, Anderson and Winder supported the motion, which was carried, and referred to the Legislative Committee. The Council went into committee to consider tenders. On resuming, it was reported that the tender of Messrs McGrath and Burke had been accepted for the erection of the, Te Aro baths, the erection of a sea wall, and the widening of the roadway at Clyde quay. The amount of the tender was not disclosed. The tender of Mr James Cook was accepted by the Council for section 24 of block 3, To Aro. A three-story warehouse is to be erected on the section.
