Tho Now Zealand Shipping Company has been advised that the steamer Rakaia arrived at Gravesend on the 27th February, that the Wakanni sailed from Capetown on the 26th, and that tho Tongariro sailed from Gravort-nd on the 27th ult. with troops for South Africa. A Picton telegram spates that the Mana sailed for Wellington. at 5.30 last evening, but put back at 7.15 p.m. through stress of weather. The barquentino Ilancla Isle left Newcastle on the 21st with a load of coal for Wellington. , The barque Timaru, from Eclithbnrg (South Australia), was' sighted off Sinclair Head yesterday morning. There was no wind in the Strait and the vessel was clrfting away to the south-east with the tide, With, the wind from the south which sprang up in the afternoon, how. ever, tho vessel made the Heads .and was towed in by the Dnco last evening, anchoring at 6.30 p.m. Tie Timaru. which left Eclithbnrg on February 4th, advised as bound for Auckland, is loaded with salt. The barque Norman McLeod, which left Lyttelton on November 27th with a lead of produce, arrived at Capetown on January 17 th.

; The barque Bessfield, Which li ft Camara '■ on October 9th. arrived in London on Fefciruary 14th. | The ship Elmville, has bean, chartered to load coal at Newcastle for a Now; Zealand port. < V, ■ . ... ■ . ; The Talnue arrived from Sydney .at 10.15 a.m. yesterday after a. fine-weather passage of four and p. half daysi ■, The steamer left Sydney at 8.30 p.m. on Sitpi’day and Farewell Spit was passed at 1 a.m.,yesterday , ■■ The scow Moana arrived from Eaipara at 10 p.m. on Wednesday after a run of eleven clays. The little vessel is heavily loaded with 82,951 ft of kauri timber for Messrs Stewart and Co. and 20,11.6 ft of kauri for the Railway Department. The Moana comes to port in._cha.rge of, Captain R. Wilson,' Captain" Olseh,”!ier former skipper, has accepted the charge of a new schooner running in the inter colonial trade, belonging to the Messrs. Lane, of Wh ingnroa. $ Tho question of tho future of, steam navigation promises to be materially altereef ns liquid fuel is more generally adopted. As indicating what progress iiaa already been made in this direction, a London shipping journal gives the following interesting particulars:—"The steamship Cowrie lately made tho voyage from Kootei, Borneo, to London, 9250 miles, using only liquid fuel. She employed only six stokers, instead of 16 with coal. The oil consumption was 22 tons per day, against 35 tons of coal, and as a ton of oil occupies 35 cubic feet, while a ton of coal demands 45 cubic feet, the saving in bunker space was considerable. In loading, the oil was put aboard at the rate of 300 tons per hour.” Taking tho exchange at 2s 6d, this would mean 18s 9d per ton, a price lower than what coal could be-bought at, while there is a smaller consumption and a less space occupied in stowage and saving in wages nil going to favour the use 'of liquid fuel. The difficulty regarding [speed has been overcome, and lato advices show that better results have been obtained from liquid fuel than from qcal. It must not be forgotten that directly the demand for liquid fuel increases, unless the production expands at the same ratio, tho price will move up, and heuco shipowners are hardly likely to make wholesale conversions from coal burning to liquid fuel using steamers until tho future supply is more definite The Maponrika was to leave Nelson at 4 o’clock this morning for Wellington' direct.

The liotomnhaua will take to Lyttelton this afternoon 550 sheep, from Mr Field, of Pahiatua. for a Christchurch consignee, i The Tnkapnua will take in at New Plymouth this afternoon a full cargo of bat-

ter and cheese for the Banffshire, 4000 boxes of butter and 1000 cases of cheese. The Rotoiti. due in Wellington next Wednesday, will also bring from Vaw Plymouth for the Banffshire 7000 boxes cf butter and 1000 cases of cheese. The probable arrival of the San rrancisco mail at Auckland next Monday has necessitated a variation in the running ol the Takapuna. Instead of calling at A Olson on her mu from Wellington fo Onehunga on Sunday night she will go to Now Plymouth direct, leaving that port tor Onehunga at about midday on Monnuy. She will then lie available to bring down the San Fransisco mail on Tuesday morning from Onehunga. The Takapuna wi i tranship the mail to the Rotoiti at a civ Plymouth and then take up her ordinary run from New Plymouth to Onehunga on arrival of the express train from Welling ( ton on Tuesday night. The Elingamite is expected to reach V* Islington on the morning of Friday, the Bth inst. Messrs W. M.
