STEAMER LOST IN A FOG

The steamer City of Bin do Janeiro, i>mi Hongkong ami Yokohama, struck a ledge at (ho Golden Gate, San Francisco. ■ luring ,1 log, and sank. The orew numbered 140, and the steamer also carried twenty-nine cab. ll and sixty-live steerage passengers, tho latter including seven whites. The sea was smooth at the time. The vessel foundered in fifteen niinutes, and 150 persons wore drowned. (Received February 24, 4.56 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, February 22. Details of the wreck of the City of Bio do Janeiro show that Pilot Jordon, uho was in charge, warned Captain Ward, on. entering the Golden Gate, that it was unsafe to proeood in the fog, Inn. Jie advice was disregarded. After tho vessel struck the pilot shouted “All lake (o the boats.” The Chinese aboard howled frautica,!n , and Dm women screamed in a pileg: is ni aimer.
Numbers scrambled fur the boats, and seme jumped overboard. Captain Ward placed tho women in I ii? boats, which were manned partly in male passengers and partly by the crow. One. loaded boat was swamped, and another was impaled on a, .spar while trying to escape from the suction caused by the sinking .steamer. Tho captain locked himself in tho ’•■talc-room and sank with the ship. Captain Hocht, of tho Germany Navy, -.aved himself by means of a lifebelt. The missing include Mr R. Wildman, Amoricah Consul-General at Hongkong, with his wife and two children.
