HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

SUMMER FLOWER SHOW. Notwithstanding, tHo unfavourabh season, the summer show of abov< society, which opened in the Eediera: Theatre, Manors street, yesterday afternoon, proved a great success, both ir, tho mini her and the excellence of tlu exhibits. Tho hail presents a vory attractive appearance, with its dark background of fernery, moat of which wat obtained from Government House, one which sets off the magnificent collection of flowers and blooms, of every shade ol form and colonur. Amongst the exhibit. l specially worthy of mention is a very fine display of cut flowers from Air E. Cooper’s nursery, Lower Hutt, and -Ui E- Mason’s garden at Tiiifca. Even better results would have bean shown had the show been, held some three or four weeks earlier. Tho effects of the late and unfavourable season are, however, scarcely perceptible on the beautiful display of blooms. An exhibit worthy of mention, bub for which there was no class, is two monster cabbages, grown by tho Sisters of Mercy at Titahi Bay. Air F. Ala son shows a fine specimen cl the Lilium Awatum. Air G. Hunt’s ’ display of new varieties of pelargoniums compels attention. Airs Derrett, of Paten, sends some very fine sweet peas, fuchsias and pelargoniums. The collections of marigolds exhibited by Dr Newman and Mr S. Alpe are exceedingly creditable. There is a very fine entry of hand and bridal bouquets, and Mrs Burne exhibits a collection of coleus and greenhouse plants that attracts much attention. A curiosity is on exhibition—a “sport” from New Zealand green flax, in the form of a bronze kiaf. Noticing the peculiar colour of the leaf on a native plant, Air Stowe procured its seed, from which hti has raised a number cf plants, all hearing the same coloured leaf. The exhibition as a whole is a very interesting one, and well w'orth a visit.' The judges of pot plants ware Alessrs J. Poole and W. Jay, and Alessrs W. Glen and A. McKay judged the cut flowers.
